"this motion image can not be played"

Hi all,

Just bought a stack of Panasonic class 10 gold cards for my GH13 and I'm filling each card up to test them.

I just left my cam recording for at least 20 mins. Turned round and saw it wasnt recording so assumed card was full (already had lots of footage on it) but when I went to playback the recent clip it said 'this motion image can not be played'

I am about to switch to using these to record weddings and this has totally put me off... I can't risk recording for 20 mins and finding it is not accessible.

I do not have a card reader to test to see if the video is actually recorded.

Any advice much appreciated

is what I thought I had. (I didnt hack my camera i bought it used already hacked)

How can I check whether this is the case or not?

Do you know if the data will still be on the card?

Can i ask where you bought the cards from ...Ebay?? Cheap?? Reputable dealer.

Partly filled cards are one of the signs of a fake card, i wasn't aware Panasonics, most have been Kingston and Sandisc.

Don't want to alarm you but could explain the problem, 20 mins is about the limit of fake cards at that data rate.

Have you used other cards without issues with that GH13??

i think you should get a card reader =). if you shoot mjpeg and bitrate is too high it will not play back in camera regardless, same goes with rec limit, once it hits max file size 4gig from memory which is about 2-3mins depending on bitrate it will stop automatically. If the file was avchd then it may have froze up depending on what hack was applied and what you were shooting, ie static detailed shot on tripod tends to freeze things up. what were you filming?

If it were me i would re-load the patch that way i know exactly what i am shooting with, not relying on somebodies words.

yes, as ramboo said, more info needed, what card are you shooting with, what class is it? I have shot 25min plus with 40Mbps on a Panasonic class 6 16gig with lcd on and the only reason why it stopped there was because battery wasn't fully charged.

yes other cards work fine and the problem doesnt always happen on the same card so I dont think its down to the cards (I paid more to get them from a trusted dealer too)

How can I tell what patch is applied to the camera?

I'm not recording mjpeg its FHD AVCHD mode.

Sounds like it must be the settings on the camera but I'd love to find a way to check what they are (the patch/hack I'm talking about here) before I re-apply it and risk buggering it up...

you really don't know for sure whats been applied, there in lies the problem. applying the hack is fairly straight forward nowdays with ini file presets, like lpowell and his 40mbps reliability settings, that have all the settings checked for you. all you need to do is load it and create a new firmware.

ok i'll have a google for some sort of guide and try to do it myself.

There's no way I can reverse the hack and brick the camera so that it can't be hacked is there?

Appreciate your help.

Hang on tiki, if it works for long records with other cards then the hack is probably ok. I would rule out the new cards as a problem first, it's easy to do with a card reader and a simple free card checking software program like crystalmark or h2testw http://fightflashfraud.wordpress.co...ld-standard-in-detecting-fake-capacity-flash/

First buy a card reader.

The issue here is your saying the camera has worked fine with other cards, can you confirm this is the case, like full card of video and all files play on a PC??

Mr Fanny is right, no way to check what patch you have on the camera, but first things first.

you dont need to google anything..ha its all in the stickies up top. Here is lpowells settings, he has even linked where to dl ptools and original firmware as well as an illustration how to use it all...top bloke hey.

only real way to brick your camera is for it to have a power cut in the middle of upgrading firmware. It is good practice to update with a full battery and not use the AC adapter. Always make sure you have version compare ticked so you wont get any headaches later on.

hold up....so you are having playback issues on PC and not in camera? Its known that the whole usb to pc thing is quite unreliable, including doing firmware updates. card reader is the only way to go to be sure.

I have a card reader on my PC at home, just not where I am now.

I bought 2x 16GB cards and 3x 8GB cards.

Whilst recording a full card at home (virtually a static image so very low bit rate) it worked fine. I have since found out this is not the best way to test the card.

So today I've brought to work and pointed it out of the window at the road, lots more movement. I've got the error on lets say card B, when I deleted the file that wouldnt display, it then recorded fine to the rest of the card.

I then tried card C. Did a 30 min recording. Battery died, put another battery in and whislt continuing to record to fill up card, after 10 mins or so I saw it had stopped recording. upon playback i see the error again.

This time I didnt delete the file as I want to test at home to see if I can still access the file. I could easily format the card again and do another test now to see if the error is replicated as this would help point it at the card but I'd be surprised if its the card as they were from a big name in the UK.

Let me know if you think I'll definitely not be able to access the data using a memory card and I'll format and go for a full card record again.

ive just put in another card and saw 'no valid picture to play' so assumed it was blank.

Decided to go with another full card record looking out of the window (something I havent done yet, all full cards are from lower bitrate footage at home or a combination of that and footage out of the window) and I noticed it said 32mins remaining. I thought this couldnt be right for an 8gb so formatted and now it says 1hr. I can only assume this was one of the cards with a corrupted file on so I have formatted and im going for a full card higher bitrate test.

On the cards that had the problem i MAY have not formatted in camera before starting so if this card doesnt show the error I'll format the other error containing card and do another test.

Good idea, format all the cards so they are a known starting point and go from there.

If you would rather not have a hacked camera, you can restore the FW to original, that's a decision you can make and re hack it later if you need to or as Mr Fanny said, use the lpowell reliable patch as it's recommended for extended event shooting.

might off-topic, but no relevant info found...
when files cut and paste to computer from sd card (with card reader), ¨this motion image cannot be played¨ will showed up once ¨playback¨ pressed after SD inserted, is that normal ?looks the machine have special memory on SD card with all files saved.¨Delete¨ is only way now.

the card still has other minor files that refer to the footage so it makes sense that it cannot be played since the file isn't there anymore to be played. format your card or copy and paste instead of cut and paste.

Stop this confusion. First verify hack before questioning cards. This is the logical process to take.

1. Download Ptools, download lpowell's j settings.

2. Format your best card on camera

3. Transfer hack onto card

4. Re-hack camera with card

5. Reformat all other cards

6. Upload PRIVATE folders to computer using a card reader

All of your issues will be gone. I promise you that. If not, simply return your cards and buy a Sandisk or Panasonic 16Gb card - records 2 hours of J setting 1080p24/25 or 720p50/60 perfectly.

Then you will have to deal with file management issues (lots of PRIVATE folders and file numbers resetting each import - Grrrr!)

thanks Lucas, I forgot about this but its something I will try now. I intended to check the hack but to be honest I don't know how.

I'm sure a bit of a google will direct me to a simple enough tutorial so I'll do this tonight.

Actually, all the problem and symptoms you describe are totally the same with my G2 and I still don't know how to fix the problem. I bought my G2 original, not hacked, so before or after the hack - the problem appears.
And the most weird is: when I open the card via USB cable from G2 to PC, I see a lot of unrecognized files with no extension and empty folders created in Motion MJPEG directory - all their name are with weird symbols and with sizes in gigabytes (?!?). Notice: I never record in MJPEG! Only in AVCHD!
My card is A-DATA 32GB Class 10
