I'm already looking at pushing a project or two into the new year so I'll have a couple of weeks to play with and work out the kinks with the 2 cams we have on order. Depending on early testing I may hold a couple of mid profile jobs so I can use these instead of the HVX's.

Looks like Timur (and Barry too) will have done some of the heavy lifting before they arrive.

And did I read correctly - these may ship / arrive sooner than expected?

About ship dates/times I've heard the early ship rumor from a distributor, but they corrected it and said it won't be happening. But that's only 1 place.... so. I dunno.

Oh man so am I.

I tested the xenars on an alexa. It was gorgeous. Their bokeh is perfect. Beautifully creamy. Like an ultraprime. Very zeiss interms of sharpness. But like a cooke interms of color rendition and "charachter".

By no means are xenars perfect but they are awesome for the price and I can't wait to get them. Hopefully in three weeks or so.

So the new December 18th ship date that was mentioned here is not accurate?

As far as I know, the date may indeed have been moved forward. We should get Jan to clarify, but I thought someone posted that they'd asked her and she'd confirmed that they could start arriving sooner.

When I asked one major supplier, they said January because of the holidays. But Jan would certainly know better. It might be the difference between the first preorders being filed and regular orders.

Hey Barry...will you be releasing an AF-100 book by the time the camera ships?

ah bummer. I guess it makes sense. Don't know how anyone could write a book on the specifics of a camera that's just being given now for observation and is being shipped in literally a month from today.

Well, I figured that some of the basics would have not dramatically changed...with only a minor details for touchup when the actual camera is relesed...

No, that is simply not possible. But I'm working on something.

Hey Barry, I'm not sure of your format for these books. I would imagine that for the HVX books for instance you were dealing with a reader that was considerably experienced in the video field. But with the AF100, I think you may be getting alot of readers that are coming from a DSLR background and the AF100 will actually be their first real video camera. You might want to bold parts of the book for basic info that many readers here wouldn't require, but would be new for the photographer that isn't used to all the features of a video camera. I'm thinking the AF100 will be unique in its user base in this regard. Most people just don't jump into a $5K professional camera as their first, but I think many buyers will be first time video camera owners with only experience with DSLR's and a photographic background. So, I guess I'd like to request not only all the advanced info that will be contained, but also a parrallel "AF100 for Dummies" narrative maybe in "bold" that runs along side all the really meaty stuff. Just a thought.

I might be wrong, but I think most AF100 buyers will be people coming from HVXs and HPX-170s.

Some of those actually got a DSLR in the meanwhile while some (like me) stuck with the 1/3 cameras because of the hassles and problems associated with DSLRs.

I think the hardcore DSLR users might keep them or perhaps wait for the 5D mkiii.

You could be right, but the AF100 is basically a DSLR on steroids. People that are devotees only to the DSLR are going to want a AF100 because it's just a little reach above the 5DII, and you just get so much more (given the IQ is equal of course). Many, many DSLR owners aren't just broke film makers that can't afford anything better. They want the aesthetic IQ of the DSLR but in a better more functional package. The AF100 is the first hopefully in a long series of competitive product that will deliver that.

Actually a lot of DSLR users have been shooting with all kinds of video cams for decades. DSLRs are just another tool.

As is the AF100. Personally I have shot everything from film, Umatic, Beta, DVCpro, DVcam, XDcam, DSLRs starting back in the 70's.

But I will most likely buy whatever Barry comes out with. Just as I bought the EX3/1 field guides and DVD's and Philip Blooms DSLR videos.

A good instruction manual and someone else's take on a new camera just helps me come up to speed faster, and I find is always a good investment.

Yes, I'm sure there will be many coming to the AF100 from your similar background, but I'm also sure that there will be many coming to the AF100 from the "Laforet" background. No previous video background, years of photographic experience accessing the video experience only through their 5DII. More photographers than ever were introduced to video because of the 5DII. The AF100 will be a big jump for them in learning curve coming from their DSLR. ..or I could be wrong, but I doubt it. :-)

f64manray, I was not arguing with you, I think you are absolutely right.

I was just making the point that a good manual and practical overview of a new cameras capabilities and settings, will be very helpful for everyone.
