This may sound redundant

People spend between $100 and much more for a mic, then several $100 more on wind protection. But, how would I best be able to record clean wind sounds for background?

With full wind protection. You'll get the sound of the wind without the popping you'd have without protection.

I'll leave that to the pros, but my guess would be that an omni would be a good choice.

*ducks as he realizes that he doesn't know crap*

hahaha, u know on this whole entire website, the audio section is the most brutal one.

oh well.... (preparing the fire proof suit for all the upcoming flames)

Generally the sound of wind is accomplished by recording something the wind is moving through; trees, grass, clothing, window, tunnel, etc.

Cheers

I record wind sounds ambient in stereo. In the past I used an XY stereo mic but in the past couple years I have really grown fond of M/S stereo. Basically get a figure 8 mic to piggyback on the hyper or shotgun (you already own) inside your zeppelin. Much easier to set up quickly on location shoots.

Hope that helps
