I wanted to research my problem before bugging the pros out there on this "jagged edge" issue so I went to the dvxuser archives and found the same problem I'm having but the issue was never really cleared up - i.e.; properly addressed/resolved in the discussion. Please see this posting: http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=6749&page=2&pp=20
The problem with jagged edges of everything as seen in the example stills here are same as my own except mine are much worse. (I estimate to not be resolving more than about 50 lines of horizontal resolution.)

Would dirty or worn heads cause this? I've adjusted every possible setting (I think.) Tried to look at it in both Final Cut Pro and iMovie HD - all the same - really ugly!

Please someone help me out here. I've shot several hours of footage recently and just now have noticed this when transfering the tapes. I'm really bummed on this!

(P.S. - notice how in the two example frames (in the original post) you can't even read the license plates on the cars. My footage is the same or worse. I was standing about 15 feet from a vehicle and could not make out the "4x4" emblem on the side. )

looks like your image is freezed in field mode, not full frame. Playing it the image is jagged as well ?

My NLE has option to show still in fields or frames, if you are freezing in camera, I guess it shows as field.

oh yea, playing the image(s) is very, very jagged - like really, really bad resolution.
Listen, I've got to take some children to see star wars. Please you guys if you can help me out on this I appreciate it very much. I'll check back in a couple of hours.

thanks again,

The other thing I can think for jagged: inverted fields... how is the footage if you connect your camera direct in the monitor and playback from the camera ?

Ulisses

yes, camera hooked up to computer - viewing through apple 23" cinema display - SAME THING.
. . .

Save out your footage from FCP as QuickTime. (Directly to quicktime w/o conversion or compressor). Open in QT player, get info, set video -. Quality -> high.
Does this look the same?

OB1, please try to watch you footage in a video monitor via s-video cable.
Your footage was recorded at 24P, 30P or 60i ?

shot my footage in 24p(adv.) (on dvx 100A). Saved a clip as quicktime (from Final Cut). Opened in Quicktime and opened movie info. window. I don't see anything about quality, but I noticed the FPS (frames per sec.) indicates 30. When I set system settings in Final Cut, I stipulated the frame rate to be 24 per sec. and set as anamorphic footage (I am using the adapter).

I thought maybe I had mis-appropriated a setting in Final Cut which is why I tried to use Apple's iMovie - figuring the settings would be more generic and less likely for me to mis-configure.

I'm not sure what to try next. Can you advise on how to make sure Final Cut is pulling the footage for progressive video (not simply interlaced?)

This is so embaressing right now because comparing my DVX footage with a $650 Panasonic consumer camera on the same NLE and display is making my DVX look bad.

I'm sure this is just a case of me not knowing what I'm doing here - I'm not too proud to admit that - just need a little guidance here it seems.

Thanks in advance!

Ulisses, you mean not to view through the apple display right? Can I use RCA jacks into a standard television? I don't have a high end editing type monitor.

Can I not view the same through the Apple display?

Footage was shot in 24P mode.

OB1,

If you have a wrong setting in your Apple while capturing, connecting the camera direct in a TV or monitor (even through a RCA) should be a good way to check the original image camera recorded and compare with your apple display. Using S-video cable the image will have more definition than RCA (including the jagged lines) :). But use the RCA if it is the only way you have to watch your footage direct from the camera

Also check in your NLE the settings your are using to capture your 24P, maybe it is doing kind of re-scale in your footage. Another thing: record something with the DVX in 60i (standard video) or 30P and load it in FCP to compare.
