This is Weird!

I made a DVD using DVD architect in Vegas 6 of a short film. I'm Importing as NTSC DV 24p (720x480, 23.976 fps) Then Croping to 16:9. I rendered using the MPEG-2 Preset.

I then bring the file into DVD Atchitect as a NTSC Widescreen(720x480) project. When the DVD is done, I watch it on my computer everything is perfect. When I watch it on my T.V It's in widescreen but then the spaces on the bottom and top are a shade of grey.

It's not totally black like it's suppose to be when watching a regular widescreen movie. I put in a regular Movie to see if it's my T.V and it's not. The regular Movie plays fine with no grey shades.. I have to be doing something wrong, any ideas? Here's a snapshot I took from my T.v notice the grey on top and bottom.

p.s I tested this on 2 separate T.V's same thing. and I shot the movie in 24p advance mode.

Please help, if you can

You cropped wider than 16:9. When you exported as 16:9, the black of the timeline below your cropped video was rendered as part of the picture.

The black of the timeline is 0 IRE; the black bars created by your DVD player are 7.5 IRE.

What you need to do is run a solid black card under the entire length of your video. Then, go into its properties and change each color value from 0 to 16. Then, you'll have a 7.5 IRE card which will show out from under the cropped video, and will be rendered with the 16:9 frame. It will then match the bars your DVD player puts in.

David, this reminds me: I once saw a tutorial somewhere where it shows you how to create a DVD that on reg: 4:3 TVs shows a letterbox, but on widescreen television/computers it shows in 16:9 (no bars) and it does it automaticaly via the DVD player.

Does this sond familiar, and if so how is it done (in a Vegas/DVDA workflow)?

Thanks so much!

ED

You just create a widescreen DVD. The DVD player will take care of the rest. (Assuming it's set up correctly, which it should be out of the box.)

David, you know what... it didn't work. But I just realize, it's nothing I'm doing wrong in Vega.. My T.V is not Widescreen, that's why I'm seeing those grey bars.
Eventhough my DVD player is widescreen my T.V is not.

But when I put in "Scream" which is in widescreen the T.V plays it as widescreen automaticlly without the grey bars but it when I put on my film the gey bars appear like above. What should I do guys... make my final version 4:3 and hope people will have a widescreen T.V and DVD player when I sale it to them.. It plays in widescreen on my computer just fine though without the gry bars...DAMN! I'm stressing :(

Yup! I went through alot of DVD's just testing, I did everything right. Have you ever tried burning a 16:9 project then playing it on a 4:3 T.V? what happened?

What I'm pissed off about is how in the hell "Scream" plays fine and my movie has to have grey bars on the same T.V DAMN IT!

This is what it looks like once brought in to DVD Architect, notice no grey bars, but once I burn the Image and play it there's grey bars like above.

Did you crop, or did you mask?

This is what I understand you to have done:

1) You're working in a Widescreen project in Vegas.

2) You cropped 4:3 footage -- probably to about 2.35:1, correct?

3) You rendered the project as the DVD Architect Widescreen template.

I then said you should:

1) Grab a black card from the Media Generator.

2) Change all of its color values to 16 (except Alpha -- you didn't change the Alpha, did you? If you did, that'll explain why it didn't work -- it's almost transparent).

3) Lay it under your entire project.

4) Render as Widescreen.

5) Drop into a Widescreen project in DVDA.

How does this square with what you did?

I croped to 16:9 in the preset window.

1) No, I'm not working in a widescreen project, I just croped all the footage to 16:9. I originally open my project as NTSC DV 24p (720x480, 23.976 fps)

2) You loss me with the 2.35:1, thingy.. I just used the 16:9 presets.

3) Correct!

2) Did that including the Alpha(Maybe that's where I went wrong, I will try again.
3)Did that
4)Did That.

I'm going back to the Black card and try it again, I'll update soon.

Thanks for trying to help.

If we shoot with no setup, don't the 0 IRE blacks in the video itself stay as 0 IRE? And the tv/player adds the setup, bumping them up to 7.5 IRE?

If so, why wouldn't it bump the timeline 0 IRE black to 7.5 IRE, too?

I've heard people SAY that DVD players add 7.5 setup, but I've never actually SEEN a DVD player add 7.5 setup. I don't think they really do.

Check that -- make sure you did -- because the grab you posted is wider than that. Your screen shot of DVD Architect proves it -- you have a 16:9 frame with black bars, so you cropped wider than 16:9.

1) No, I'm not working in a widescreen project, I just croped all the footage to 16:9. I originally open my project as NTSC DV 24p (720x480, 23.976 fps)
Then here's what probably happened (though the alpha channel thing may have as well) -- when you put the black card in, it was 4:3. You didn't crop that card, so it remained 4:3, and when you rendered, it was fit into the 16:9 image by having its top and bottom edges line up with the top and bottom of the 16:9 frame, but the sides won't -- they'll let anything underneath show through. You need to crop it to 16:9 as well (make sure it's 16:9).

Or, better, work in a Widescreen project, and when you pull the black card from the Media Generator, it's already 16:9 and you don't have to crop. This is what I thought you did.

Fortunately, you can switch project settings on the fly, so get rid of the black card you put in, switch to 16:9, and then pull out a new one and adjust it like I said earlier.

That just makes it more confusing. :) If they don't bump it up, then wouldn't the 0 bars be blacker than black, and not a little greyish?

(All theoretical for me...if I do a 16:9, it's sixteen by nine and I don't put any bars in.)

(On the other hand, I'll probably be cropping for 2.35 or .40 next time around...)

(Not that's any problem trying it both ways and just seeing which looks better, when the time comes.)

E-mail me your .veg file -- david at david-jimerson dot com. I can look at exactly what you did.

One last thing -- did you shoot letterbox?

Make a normal 4:3 dvd and it will do what you want on 4:3 TV. Use RW dvds to test and when it looks good, then burn -R or +R dvds.

Cheers
