Not just for DSLR's and it will be a good add on for smaller video camera's too or even full sized ENG camera's etc

Yeah. Any time double system is required or at least preferred. I wonder if its redundant to feed it with a mixer, e.g. a sound devices 302 or something. If the preamps on the tascam are so nice that itd be pointless.

Judging by the price, I highly doubt the preamps will be 'pro' caliber... but may be acceptable to 'some' folks expectations.

It's got a safety track mode so you can record a -6db or -12db lower track at the same time as your regular recording. If your talent suddenly shouts, or if you messed up the initial level you have a backup track that isn't blown out. That's worth $350 right there.

and with most sub £5k camera's now being used for "pro" broadcast I am sure the pre amps will be acceptable for most TV applications.

I always smile when people talk about pre-amp quality no being 'pro'. So many people buy cameras for 'pro' use that have preamps worse than a £15 cheap pc sound card. There are levels of performance, certainly - but let's face it - the portable devices so frequently slated for poor performance are miles better than we've had in the past and accepted. The quality of many of the frequently slated devices when provided with a decent level from the mic are actually very good. I'd bet the new Tascam does a pretty good job at repairing design deficiencies of a 'pro' item. Should we not express our displeasure at the DSLR manufacturers, not the people who are making devices to 'fix' shortcomings of another product. I actually find it ironic that this new product is bigger than the camera it's attached to.

Professional - when applied to products doesn't just mean higher fidelity audio, it means build, reliability, ergonomics and facilities too! That's why many of us have Tascams, Zooms and other products - they do a decent enough job, all things considered. I have a cheap portable recorder that hisses like mad connected to a low output mic, too far away from the subject - but stick it in front of an orchestra, or choir, or church organ and to my ears it sounds perfectly good enough quality to be called 'professional'. If I need high gain, I don't use it. It doesn't make it a bad product.

Totally agree Paul and we have never had it so good for kit that can get great useable results in the right hands, this will be be on my shopping list as an easy to apply recorder and small mixer to compliment my P2 cameras.
