This is just weird - Optical illusion

Alright, that settles it...seeing as I posted this thing I guess I should finally get off my a** and print one out huh?

Nice clip Captain!
I just showed my wife the video and she was creeped out by it....
haha

I've done 'em in blue, green, and reddish purple so far.

Most people laugh with delight at it... but so far one moron has actually said he never saw the illusion. (same guy that never gets a joke, etc... why was I surprised)

Thanks again for posting this Luis... I'm getting a lot of mileage out of it.

WOAH, this is even creepier in person.
I finally printed it out and put it together this morning.

It's pretty amazing how easily the illusion falls apart once you open both eyes.
I also looked at it through the camera...and the illusion works immediately given that the cam is just showing you what's in front of it and it's up to us to take the 2D clues and interpret the 3D space.

I found that it works much better when the light source is coming from underneath the dragon. The first time I tried it it was lit from above, so even when the illusion worked it looked very strange due to the shadows that were falling on it's face.

Now I've got it sitting on a bookshelf, and it's staring down at me as I write this.
It should have been a raven instead of a dragon.
:)

I'm getting intrigued by the people who can't see it... you guys must be HARD CORE right brainers. It's like your brain won't let your eyes perceive it.

When a friend of mine said he couldn't see it I wanted to smack him... now I've got two people who need a wack.

Reminds me of the frustration with the 3D poster craze.

Tankgirl, are you trying to see it with both eyes open?
I can't see it unless I close 1 eye, losing depth perception.
It also might help to light it from below, so that the shadows don't throw you off too much.

I've been trying to find a place where there isn't outside light coming in. I think that is what is throwing me off. I tried with one eye closed, no luck.

Does your eye have to lose the creases in the head?

Not trying to insult you here, but are you sure you put it together the right way?

I'm not sure what you mean by "losing the crease in the head"

She means that her lighting is so strong that she can see the inside bends on the head...

It helps if you have a decent enough printer and the dragon is reasonably dark (or saturated color)... and the seams of the head should be TIGHT, but I can't NOT see it... I struggled to NOT see it after my friend couldn't see it... and with us side by side I was laughing my @ss off saying "you don't see that?!" and he said "no I don't see anything"... and that's when I wanted to smack him for being mentally dull.

Heck, maybe I did. I mean the bends. lol, I really hope I didn't put it together wrong. It looks right. I'll try printing it out again.

Exactly, where everything meets on the head.

Here's a shot of the one I put together from different angles for you:
(not exactly the best job, but it worked for me)

Like Matt, I have to struggle NOT to see it (with one eye that is).
As soon as I look at it with both eyes the illusion falls apart completely.

I printed out a new one and just and cut it out. I called our IT guy at the station to put it together for me.

After looking at your pictures... I definitely put it together wrong. HAHA!! So that's why they have all those instructions on the paper!

:) I figured. My first instinct was to put it together the opposite way (because of what I saw in the video). The whole illusion is in the head looking AS IF it is built outwards, when it is really built inwards (if that makes sense).

Yeah, that is totally what I did. My bad. I see it now. It's very cool. I had to step back a bit and cover my one eye. But it was well worth it.

Thanks guys, sorry I'm an idiot! lol

I have mine up in my office (in the corner) and whenever someone walks in the dragon follows them around the room. Very cool.

Chris

Now that I put it together right I have been showing everyone at the station. Now I have to print one out for the GM and the owner...this isn't fun anymore.
