What's funny to me is that the visual representations of 720p, 1080i and 1080p look like an actual comparative graphic and are pretty much spot on...

[firehawk]

'Nuff said, lol. That chart Sums it all up for everyone

On a day like today, do you guys prefer your chroma to be subsampled: 411 or 420?

Back in 1998 or so, when the internet was taking over the world and AOL was worth over $100B (max market cap of $166B in 2000), a sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun" decided that the future was in streaming and tried to stream one of its episodes. Over the dial-up. It took an undetermined amount of time to download what was a postage stamp size pixelated image. The experiment was largely derided.

PS. Broadband was just coming out, so the "3rd Rock" sponsors weren't that far ahead of their time. I got my first cable modem in 2003. The lowest tier then was 256K, slightly short of a decent pixelated video but sufficient for a quick download of text. If one paid for the next tier of ~ 768K, one could get a pretty decent 5" diagonal image. When YouTube launched in 2005, it was in 240p.

The standards keep changing, and we still have rolling shutter!
