This sounds like a variation on the Nigerian Prince thing. At least they don't ask for your SSN or bank account number. But the really odd thing is that they are targeting the likes of us. If anyone thinks this is legit, please set me straight.

Yeah, it's a scam. "The sponsor will send you an overpayment?" C'mon... dead giveaway. Flag that sh!t and warn others

A few warning signs are immediate. First, they don't even know their own positions. If they're looking for anyone of experience, that person will know what their own job entails. The only reason to specify anything in a posting is if the position is different from what is typical.

Second, when you responded about a job on the list that wasn't there, they sent you a post saying that you've been hired, with an obvious copy and paste novel.

Buried in that massive e-mail is the big smoking gun:

IMPORTANT: Sponsor for this production has agreed to send out payment prior the shoot date so as to facilitate workers to be versatile and be ready for the job. Shoot starts May 2nd - 7th 2012.

So they send you a check (most likely fake) then you send back over 1000$ back to them? For a reason that makes no sense? Because the production supervisor moves around a lot? What is a production supervisor? Why does him travelling require the strangest form of payment I've ever heard of?

I suggest you report it. Maybe get as much info from them as possible.

Yup, and the want your exact physical address. And they know you won't be home on the 4th when you're heading across the country to 'the shoot'.....

So they don't know you from Adam, but are willing to pay you in advance and on top of that pay you more than you should be getting? Sounds legit to me.

I responded to this.

I responded to this.

Hello,

I have joined this forum for this topic. I am happy to have found this though for future topics. I build theatrical props & sets as well as signage and many other items. I have worked in the film industry years back with another company but have not as Scenic Art Productions. I would like to get back to the film industry. I have mainly worked on theme parks and attractions. When they will let me modify my profile I will be able to show and tell more. If you are curious you can visit my company Facebook page at: [http://www.facebook.com/scenicartproductions . I am working on a website. Well enough background and back to topic.

I had responded to this ad listed in Jacksonville Florida and I had not gotten a call back to see if they even needed sets. I assumed since they needed a production designer that they needed sets. I had sent two emails asking them to call me and nothing yet. I had recieved the email reply that was mentioned on this thread. I had searched for them and nothing, no website, no Facebook or anything. This must be a fake. If they sent me the check I would not do anything until it cleared anyway. I also would not send the money back untill the job was done just in case I work more than originally thought. If you all have seen this ad in other cities this must be fake. Oh well that is Craigslist. I have been lucky though with Craigslist so far.

I am at least glad to find this forum and look forward to talking to all of you in the future. This forum is laid out like the Haunted Attraction Forum "Hauntworld" is this run by the same people?

Thank You,
Robert Travis

The "overpayment" scam is simply a methodology, and can involve any product or service - it's been very popular with cars, furniture, various high-ticket items etc. Here it's simply been adapted to film work, to snag the endless supply of hollywood dreamers. Really, folks should pay attention to the warnings Craigslist itself posts at the top of every forum. Tired, old as the hills, standard "overpayment" scam, in slightly new clothes.
