This forum needs a "what's that click?" sticky!

I'm a chuffed-to-bits new owner of a HMC151, and new to this forum :) It looks like a fantastic place here, so many people with the same camera, looking forward to getting involved.

Anyway to the point of this thread! I had my first "oh no..." moment about 30 minutes after the camera arrived :huh: Holding the camera in my hands and tilting it back and forth, there was an obvious clicking / rattling / clunking noise like there is something loose inside. I headed to trusted friend Google in a glum mood, which perked up when I read this thread in the DVX100 forum:

Sure enouogh, with my HMC151 switched on the noise goes away. Obviously it uses a similar initialisation system. Thought this might help fellow new HMC150 / HMC151 owners (who might be a bit noobish like me)!!

You were not the first and I doubt you'll be the last to say "What's that sound!!!".

I think we need a few stickies on here.
 
Yeah we used to have fun telling people that their camera was broken and would have to be shipped to Japan. Or tell them to put it in a plastic bag and bury it in the yard over night (yes for real), or tell them to hold a nine volt battery in one hand as a diagnostic while wearing rubber soled shoes and turning the camera upside down to see if they still heard it ... but finally Panasonic asked us to stop because they were getting to many calls about having to send their camera to Japan to get it fixed, etc. so we had to stop (yes for real).

But yeah it's normal.
 
I washed mine with soap and water until the sound was gone....

Now that it's a real Sticky [Thank you Jack Daniel Stanley!] the sound is the IS -
Image Stabilization mechanism.
Not a problem at all.

Aahhh that makes sense... all to do with the OIS system.

Yes Jason I do intend to be a frequent visitor here! I read that someone here is writing a book on the HMC150, I can't wait to get hold of that. For me it's a massive step up, I've been using an old NV-GS400 for when clients have asked for video (I'm a web and graphic designer). With more and more clients wanting to jump on the online-video bandwagon, it seemed to be a great time for me to look into ramping up my video work. So now I've ploughed cash into a HMC151, Rode NTG-1 and a Manfrotto tripod, I intend to get the best out of it!!
 
haha that sounds scared the S*** out of me when i first got my DVX100. It took me a lot of "not agains" and google searches to find out why haha.

I think the fact that Panasonic had to ask you to stop lying to people is the funniest thing i've seen on this message board hahahaha.

Welcome Jim,,, good to see you've stepped up! I only got my HMC last week, but since having a DVX for a couple of years the click thing was second nature.

The GS400 was an awesome cam, probably the best consumer cam ever built. I 'd hang on to it, it''l be a gem forever!
