This announcement made me think instantly of DVXuser Erik Naso

Interesting, but unfortunately no NDs and (at that price) looks like it'd be more like a VG20 than an FS100.

Interesting, though... curious to see how it pans out

They also missed the boat with the shoulder mount design. What is it with camera manufactures designing cameras with the shoulder mount at the rear of the camera forcing the camera out in an unstable position rather than design in a balance point along with the proper viewfinder location? You would think these cameras were designed by some kid who has never really done any real shouldering of a camera.

Ditto on what David said. How could you possibly hold a steady shoulder shot with the bulk of the camera that far forward? Like the "mirroring" on the recording media. That is a great idea.

Looks like a camera for you Erik. A wonderful blend: http://www.hdwarrior.co.uk/2012/08/17/the-new-sony-nex-ea50-2740/

I’m not so sure. But thanks for thinking about me! :)

As others have stated the camera is, well kind of strange and sure is lacking. Again no built in ND filters? At least the cameras has the EVF/LCD in the right place. Thats a first!
I would like to test it out and see how the balance is. I doubt it’s balanced. Again the EVF is in the right place.

Check out the video from Sony. The camera is smaller than it looks in the pictures. Sony makes terrible promotion videos but at least you can see the camera in action. Comes with a 18-200 zoom lens that looks nice. I could see them selling a lot of these since it has features that many want in a prosumer camera. Large sensor, Interchangeable lens and power zoom at a cost of $3600. More interesting than I thought early on. Not a camera for me but for many this will fit the bill.

After watching the promo vid...I like it..but why no ND ???. Cant wait to see the first real life reviews and any idea on lens prices.

Price is $4500 according to B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/887069-REG/Sony_NEX_EA50UH_Sony_NEX_EA50UH_Camcorder_with.html

I'm actually quite fond of it but awaiting more sensor tests to see how it performs. This to me seems like a great competitor to the Canon XF300/XF100 with the advantage of interchangable lenses and large sensor.

Will it be as good as a FS100 for film/doc work? probably not. Will it be better than trying to fumble around with a DSLR for ENG/Doc work? I hope so.

i dont understand WHY they did not do the fs700 this way......

thats the kind of body i d like to see on new AF100 if it ever will see the light!

Guys, what I read is that this is basically a VG20 is a bigger body and with more features. Sony and even Panasonic have done that type of thing several times. I think Sony may be going after the wedding guys with this one. It also might be the reason why they decided to cripple the VG20 in the last minutes before release, taking some of it's announced image control functions out for the production model. So they could charge more for a VG20 with image control settings in a bigger body. I very much doubt it has the FS100 sensor and I very much doubt Sony has developed a new sensor for such a low end camera, specially that they already have the VG20 sensor.

Anyway, this is no competition for the AF100 and is not even targeted at the same market. I doubt this will make much better images than the VG20 or has half the features the AF100 has, specially with that little body or for that price. Just because the MSRP is similar to the current AF100 street price doesn't mean they are in the same league. The AF100 has a MSRP of almost $5K. In three years, which is how old the AF100 is almost, and why it costs less now, you will probably not even be able to give one of these EA50EH away for free. :) Try and find some of those low end Panasonic shoulder cameras which were basically their small 1/3" cameras in a bigger body and see how much they go for today. The AF100 is in another league all together. And again, did you see how little that is? It's tiny. It looks much bigger than it is in that product shot because we think of the older shoulder cameras and associate the size to what we know. But it actually looks just like a longer VG20 but not much bigger really:

Why do you want an ENG type of body for a movie style camera? Then buy a ENG shoulder mount news camera!

The AF100 has the perfect form factor for a "film" camera in my opinion. Very modular and easy to add on to it. It has the same form factor as a RED ONE, F3, F35, F65, Panavision Genesis and to some extent even the Alexa. And for a good reason. Have you seen how a Panavision Panaflex looks like? It's only the Red Epic that started with the funky shapes and then Canon made the C300, which looks like a DSLR and a blowdryer had a baby and the FS100 and FS700 with their awkward tape-deck shape. Cosmetically, I hope the "AF200" looks basically the same, maybe with just a lose EVF that can be mounted on the front/side for shoulder operation or back for tripod operation, again like a real movie camera.
