EVA1: Third-party LANC controllers?

This might be a bit of an odd question, but...

Has anyone tried using a third-party LANC controller (or built their own!) in lieu of the stock EVA1 hand grip?

Ultimately, I'm interested in finding a solution that allows me to use the REC and assignable buttons on a smaller unit that I can clamp onto a dual grip gimbal configuration. My assumption is that it wouldn't be recommended to put a 12 lb or maybe even 15lb max load on the EVA1 grip, so I'm looking into other ways.

Also, I can't even confirm that it uses LANC protocol (even though it is connected by a so-called "LANC cable"). Does anyone have any info on this? Or, if the stock grip can handle that much weight? Thanks!

I have used the Cinegears wireless follow focus to trigger recording and it works. Haven’t tried old varizoon controllers yet but you probably could extend the cable for the hand grip.

Have you considered trying to do something that uses the ROP functionality? This would give you access to all the assignable buttons, as well as record, iris, etc...?

As of the EVA 2.0 firmware from March, you can use various 3rd party LANC-type controllers. Not all functions are guaranteed.

Thanks Mitch, that is great news. I must have missed (or dismissed) that in the release notes, and now I can't seem to find any documentation relating to previous firmware releases... just the current one.

I do have one quick question for you, though:
Would the stock grip be capable of handling it's share of (I'm estimating) about a 12 pound load for a gimbal in a dual-grip configuration? I'm guessing that would be about a 6 pound minimum (stationary) plus any extra torque put on it from flying the camera around (which could be a lot greater).

I remember reading on a different thread here somewhere that you spoke to the weight limitation of the grip... or maybe it was the mount for the grip that is located on the camera body, itself. Unfortunately, I can't recall which, nor can I find that thread. Anyway, my search for a LANC solution is predicated on my assumption that the grip probably should not be used that way. Am I wrong to think this? Ideally, I would prefer to simply relocate the grip where I need it and enjoy full functionality (and spare myself the cost of a controller that only sort-of works). Thanks in advance!

@soarprod: thanks, that's helpful to know. Interested in investigating how wireless REC trigger works!

@OnSet: ROP is interesting, maybe if I was operating a jib, but not sure how practical it would be to strap a smartphone on a gimbal handle, lol. Physical buttons/dials would be ideal so I wouldn't have to divert my attention to the controls.

I'm trying to understand what you're asking to do here. You want to mount the camera handgrip to the side of the gimbal and support the entire rig from the handgrip? Not only is that a no-go for the grip, I should think it would be a disaster for your wrist. Maybe I'm just not understanding.

Right, that wasn't a very clear way to pose the question. Here's another stab at it:

Basically, I am wondering if the EVA1 grip is capable of handling the load put on it as one of two grips used in a dual-handle gimbal setup. To wit:

Above is a dual-grip handle offered by Ikan for it's Pivot (and other smaller) gimbals. It's not what I'm looking at necessarily, but that's the basic idea. I'm thinking more of something that attaches to rosette mounts like in the Tilta G2X here, below:

Add a rosette extension or two of some sort and then add a rosette mounted grip on one side and the EVA1 grip (with rosette adapter) to the other side.

If the gimbal weights about 4.5 lbs, and the camera plus extra stiff weighs in somewhere between 5-7 lbs more (about 12 lbs total), the question is would this end up putting too much of a strain on the EVA1 grip? If not, great!

If so, hmmmm... I'll have to look to maybe a LANC controller to help me out with REC start/stop, hopefully iris, and maybe some of the assignable buttons? Does that make sense?

Your attachments don't come through so I'm not exactly sure what this looks like, however I think I have the basic idea. The handgrip was not designed for such use, and it may be too much weight and especially torque force. Hard to tell.
