Thinking of Vegas/Neoscene for mobile editing

I'm a Mac user never owned a Windows PC but I'm thinking of setting up a VEgas/Neoscene laptop system for mobile editing. Was curious to how stable a system like this would be if I only had the necessary software installed on the machine and what could I get by with laptop wise for running this system.I seriously know nothing about winows and the various OS version they have. Seems like I can get much bang for the buck going this route. Any Vegas/Neoscene users out there? iIf so how do you like the workflow?

cineform is designed to operate without the need to high-end systems. The same goes for Vegas.. so it would run very well.

Vegas also has the advantage in the licensing area. You can install it on as many systems as you have as long as no more than 1 system is running Vegas at the same time.

The major point I guess would be screen real-estate.. make sure you get as high real estate as possible...

Cineformed files are much larger than the original MTS files so you'd need a large external hard drive, but the added benefit of that is you can plug the drive into your desktop and continue to edit at home...

I have to agree with booggerg2.

I work on nothing but laptops and Vegas was faster than CS3 but adding Neo just made it far more easier from a AVCHD stand point.

I started with a 14 inch screen then 15, 15.4 16.4 and now I'm on 18.4.
I think the 18.4 is as large as I'll ever want to go but the 16.4 was very good.

I think anything 15 inches or larger is good for cutting.

Also don't think that you cannot have other apps loaded on a editing computer.
RoboHelp
CS3 Web Premium
Wild Forms
Capitave CS3
Acrobat Pro 9
Open Office 3
Sony Acid
Are all major app I have on the same machine plus I use this same machine for PHP and ASP.Net development and testing.

No major crashes or troubles.

One more thing.

I'm one of the few Vista users who has never had big problems but so far I'm hearing nothing but good stuff about Windows 7 which should ship near the end of the year.

If you cannot wait that long then I think you'll do fine with Vista 64 or even old XP 64.
Whatever you do just get a 64 bit system that will work with your apps.
Don't go with a 32 bit system.

I agree, no problems with vista either, but i've been using 7 (64 bit) as my only OS for quite some time.

Microsoft announced it'll ship in october of this year, and PC's bought with vista after July 1 get a free upgrade when it's released (though you would want x64 since you can't upgrade 32-bit vista to 64-bit 7 afaik)

17" laptops aren't what they used to be, long battery life and relative light weight are easy to find. As a bonus, my 17" lappy has two internal hard drive bays. This laptop has been my main PC for two years now, and considering my level of power requirements, that's saying something.

Make sure to shop online, since most large electronics stores have high mark ups and shy away from large enthusiast laptops (such as the 18.4" Hidef mentioned).

I could talk for pages and pages about laptop shopping, but that would be impractical. Vegas/neo scene will work great for you.

I've cut HD content with Vegas on my Macbook C2D 2GHZ, 2GB Ram and an external 2.5" FW drive and it ran fine. The only issue was the 1280x600 LCD resolution was too small for any productive work.. A laptop with 1920x1200 would be awesome... 1680x1050 (15.4) would be good too..

Couple things to keep in mind when buying a lappy for use with Vegas:

1. GPU is not used by Vegas, but a fast CPU will pay dividends.

2. Get a big hard drive - Neo is great but the files are much, much bigger than ACVHD.

What about using Vasst's Upshift program? Has anyone tried this? Does it work similarly (or identically) to Neo?
