Thinking aout getting a D800

With NAB so close I'm debating on selling my AF100. I have a feeling it'll be worth less if I wait until after NAB to sell it. I've been looking at the current crop of cameras for a replacement and I'm leaning towards the Nikon D800 so far. The D800 is full frame 35mm that can crop to roughly Super 35mm if needed and has a clean HDMI out. I have no m4/3 lenses and most of my lenses are Nikon so the transition would be painless. Using the D800 with my Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 will give me a good balance between a great image and a great quality codec. I'm a little leery about replacing a professional video camera with a DSLR. Aside from my AF100 I also own a GH2 so I'm familiar with DSLR limitation, the D800 has less, but it still has a few. I would miss the Histogram and I'd really miss the ND wheel. I'm not sure about the D800 audio yet. Is there automatic gain? Is it 44.1 or 48? Are there visual levels on the screen to see? and new up to date news about this camera and it's video/audio features would be very helpful.

The D800 has a live histogram in live view. I checked that myself at a Nikon product launch a week ago.

You can set the audio manually. There is also live audio metering but the audio levels can not be adjusted during recording, so you need to set them before you press record. The audio is 48 Khz 16 bit stereo.

The histogram is good news! The Audio is better news! Getting a Juicelink box will fix the adjusting during recording. I've heard the transition to the 1.5 crop isn't that intuitive. What do you know about that Kyle?

I only got to play with it for a little bit. The crop modes seemed to be buried pretty deep in the menu system, but if the D800 is like other Nikons may be possible to assign a shortcut to function button that should bring you directly to that menu. Then changing crop modes would be a quick two button operation.

That would be nice.

Does anyone know about morie or aliasing and how good or bad it is?

I think we'll have to wait until the camera ships before we know anything more for sure. The camera I got to play with for a few minutes was a early pre-production model, with an old firmware. I was not allowed to take any pictures or video on my own card.

No, sorry. There is a very slim chance that I may get a production camera from Nikon to test a few days before the launch. But I'm not holding my breath.

I pulled the trigger on the D800. I figured regardless of what comes out at NAB the D800 would be a good stills camera which I also need. I will probably pick up another camera after NAB as well.
