GH5 Thinking about the GH5S or the BMPCC 4k - any thoughts?

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could suggest if I'd be better off with the GH5S or BMPCC 4k.

I need a video recording camera for two things.

1 - recording podcasts of >30m length (generally 2 hours), for which the GH5/5S is the only non camcorder camera that can do this
2 - occasionally making short films, fashion films, music videos etc -> this is very much a hobby

I was thinking of getting the GH5 and the BMPCC 4k. But I'm thinking now the GH5S might be a better buy.

It's got the long recording time of the GH5 and seems to be 80% of the way to the BMPCC 4k.

I loved the original pocket cam, the image was lovely and I used and abused the hell out of it. I was planning on getting the 4k as a no-brainer but actually, given it uses the GH5S sensor, the difference between the two cameras doesn't seem 'that' large.

As in, it seems sufficiently close so that the difference is negligible, all things (and cinematic skill) being equal. At least, enough for the limited usage I'll put it through. I love the Pocket, and the Pocket 4k could be equally amorous for me. But it's a fun toy vs a serious tool.

I don't have enough experience with either camera, though, to really tell, so I was wondering if anyone has used either camera or has an opinion that would sway this old dog.

Cheers in advance y'all.

I'd get a GH5 and a P4k - best of everything and the same cost as a GH5s if you shop wisley. Plenty of very good used GH5 bodies on the market.

The two cameras actually use different sensors, and there is a noticeable difference between them.

Considering image quality alone, I think the Pocket 4K wins hands down. Even more so when you consider the price difference.

Panasonic might win for you on the feature and usability front, if you really need things like continuous auto-focus and flip out screen.

Here's what it comes down to:

P4K - Superior image, missing features, less money.
GH5 - Inferior image, additional features, more money.

Are you considering ONE GH5S instead of BOTH a GH5 and a P4K?

The GH5S features better low light performance, a slightly larger FOV and has slightly better color than the GH5. It doesn't have IBIS and costs a lot more than the GH5, and a lot lot more than the P4K. Given the use cases you listed, why do you think you would benefit from having it as your sole camera as opposed to a GH5?

To me it all boils down to just how much people plan on hand holding the camera. IBIS is an awesome feature for free but it’s also not as perfect as a gimbal. A lot of productions really are better off on a tripod or other form of stabilizing device. For absolute handheld situations I still think a gimbal is a better choice quality wise. The IBIS is basically a poor mans gimbal.

To some the low light is pretty big deal and why Sony, Canon and Nikon command a large piece of the film making pie. Also part of why BMD chose to go a similar route as the GH5S. As much as I am a. Firm believer of light everything I know there are situations in video production where that’s just not possible. I have shot for decades many seminar type events where lighting was not an option. Back then we used 2/3” DVCAM cameras which helped a lot. Having that extra sensitivity can go a long way. If it’s just desired for laziness that’s wrong but it it’s needed for difficult shooting situations then the GH5S is well worth the money.
