Thinking about selling the 24-105 Kit lens, will I regret it?

I recently got my new MKiii, and am having a hard time deciding on what to do about the lens. On the one hand, I do really like it, and, as tacky as this sounds, love having the red ring on my camera. On the other hand, the price one the 28-135 is looking awfully attractive and losing one stop and having to adjust exposure when I zoom isn't that big of a deal to me. I could also really use that money for an ultrawide, a decent tripod, or an EVF, things I all really need.

Any advice?

DO NOT exchange the 24-105 for the 28-135!!!!! Just don't even think about it. Accept your purchase and save the money up for the other things.

Agreed...if you're considering trading it for a 28-135mm - DON'T. Keep your 24-105mm. It's a nice lens. The only reason I'd consider trading/selling it would be for a faster zoom or fast prime.

I agree, you will regret it later. Not only is the 24-105 a far superior lens for contestant aperture and build quality, it's also sealed for dust and rain.

With the extended low light capability of the 5D3 the F/4 maximum aperture isn't so much of a limitation any more either. We are now using the 24-105mm F/4L on the 5D3 where previously we used the 24-70mm F/2.8L on the 5D2. Not only does the 24-105mm have a longer reach but it is sharper & has IS.

No way your 28-135 is comparable. Ofcourse, I have got some excellent shots with it, however, I sold it as it is not of the same quality. There is lot of purple fringing if you shoot against the light with the 28-135. The 24-105 f4 IS is good if you have enough light. Else, 24-70 f2.8.

Th 24-105 may be one of the best all around lenses that Canon makes. I second the point that f4 on the 5d3, with the expanded clean ISO, is very usable. If something ever happened to mine, I would replace it.

Sure. A must keep it.

ok, ok, I get it! I'll keep the lens. Thanks for the advice, I probably would have been pretty unhappy with that decision.

24-105 should not carry "L" red line!
The worst L lens I ever used... And I used it extensively last summer on tv show over the period of 30 shooting days on remote locations. Yes, it's a nice range. But optical quality is non existent... Comparing to 24-70, 70-200, 16-35 or any L primes, this lens is garbage. And if you shoot stills as well, this lens is unusable: chromatic aberrations, softness ( even at F8, a sweet spot for most lenses), etc...
i had this lens for a month, courtesy of production I was working for. I would never buy it...

It's too slow for me personally. I'd sell it for something faster (even if it's not canon). Tamron and sigma have some amazing lenses now. That being said if you really won't be doing much low light you could just use primes for those few times...

I can only imagine that there must have been something wrong with the lens you had as your experience is contrary to just about everyone else who has used this lens e.g. Ken Rockwell says "Sharpness is uniformly excellent, at any aperture and any focal length, even into the far corners on full-frame."

tata you are one of the few ever to have had such a bad example of this lens. It is optically excellent
I am not a fan of the lens but then again i am not a fan of any zoomlens.

If you sell it, a very cheap wide angle lens would be samyang/ rokinon 14mm 2.8. You'll have then some more money for a half decent tripod and evf lol. Problem solved.

been thinking about replacing with something else...
the 24-104 F4 @F4 is just as bright as 70-200 F2.8 IS @F4.5
and the slight yellow cast is a bit annoying.
