Thinking about getting a glidecam that the company used for demo..Why so cheap?

Hi,

I am considering purchasing this:

https://shop.glidecam.com/glidecam-h...used-demo.html

I understand that it is a demo, but it seems it is a good price even for that. Used glidecams do not go for that from what I see.

Although it is from the glidecam website, both the price and the fact that there is apparently no taxes on it makes me suspicious. What's the deal? I also live in Canada, for what it is worth. When I check out it seems not only do I not have to pay taxes, but also no duties up front. Anyways, I am just wondering if any body has any advise on whether it is a good purchase. It just seems to cheap, and there is something about the site that makes me suspicious. If anyone knows anything about it I'd love to hear what you have to say.

One last question...I have a sonya6000 with a kit lens, and will be upgrading to similar weighted lenses. Does this mean that I should just get the Glidecam 1000? I'm also not sure what the difference in quality is between the XR and the HD...I literally cannot find any information on the difference online.

Thank-you

Well, you're saving $120 off the actual street price. That's not alarming for a demo unit. A brief scan of eBay shows lots of listings for higher than MSRP prices, so those are all looking for rubes who will buy for exhorbitant prices. Plus, Glidecam offers a 1-year warranty on their demo gear.

Most places don't charge sales tax for out-of-state Internet sales, unless the law of the buyer's state requires it. As for import taxes and tarriffs, you'll probably be responsible for those on your own.

With a camera as small and light as the a6000 with kit lens (roughly 1lb with battery and card), you might want to go with the HD1000.

As for HD vs. XR, the weight plates are different with the XR being the weight design from the original Glidecam series and the HD using modified plates with more adjustments. Not sure what other dofferences there are, but the cheaper XR series is discontinued.

Steadicam type systems are very michanical by nature and require precision and regular maintenece over time. Gimbals and gimbal forks in particular can get damaged if mistreated and you probably wouldn't know it unles you were experienced in the first place and understand how a properly balanced steadicam should behave.

I've owned a glidecam 4000 (old model) and a smooth shooter arm and vest for more than 12 years. The gymbal is still in excellent shape, as well as the vest, with the arm only with some loose bolts that I remedied with some tape. I abuse my gear, and have to say their build quality is fantastic. A safe buy.
