The AF-100 served me well for a year. But alas I ditched it for a Scarlet and couldn't be happier. I simply hate the AVCCAM codec. If the AF-100 was AVC-Intra from the get go I might've kept it around longer.
Thats a major upgrade from a AF-100. Congrats on that purchase! The AF-100 served me well for a year. But alas I ditched it for a Scarlet and couldn't be happier. I simply hate the AVCCAM codec. If the AF-100 was AVC-Intra from the get go I might've kept it around longer.
You could have added a Samurai for $1500, instead of going for $15k-$20k for a Scarlet... I mean, obviously it's too late now, but for anyone else looking to upgrade the codec it's a simple and relatively inexpensive thing to do...The AF-100 served me well for a year. We just did a decent size shoot with two af100's for Nintendo.
One might say that there are better cameras in the world but I must say there isn't really a better camera out there for the same money.

So the question is should you dump it. If it were me I'd say keep it.
I believe the af100 will be a viable solution for at least a couple more years as long as you know how to use it : )
Trying to "keep up with the Jones' is rarely a cost effective move.
...got a D800 body on Monday. ....
EDIT: I should mention--- I think the D800 will be heralded as a great cam for the Indie film crowd-- great dynamic range and super shallow DOF with f1.4 glass....
If you have more time on your side, and art is your end goal, then I think you will like it a lot. I just come from the 'time is money' promo & spots side of things and that's my livelihood. So please don't think I'm bashing the D800 for those who want to make great indie movies! : )
Right there with ya. I was also looking for more latitude. The Nikon D800 seems to have more latitude than anything else out there.

Actually, I believe the 5D MarkIII has more latitude than the D800. The D800 has more resolution
though.
I'll caveat this by saying that we have a Mark III and we don't have a D800 .. just going on what
colleagues are telling us on the D800.
The MarkIII is a low-light wonder.
