Think before you post... please..

I just want to talk to the board about people posting their suggestions and fixes. I’m am not centering anyone out, and I am posting this message on the 2-pop board as well. A while back, someone posted on either this board or the 2-pop board, again I don’t want to single anyone out, that when switching tape brands or lubricants you should run Panasonic’s head cleaning tape for its full duration (for best cleaning of the heads). At the time I was not totally familiar with the technology of the tape and lost the instructions for the head cleaner. I ran the tape for its full duration because I was switching brands. Now I find out, after buying a new tape (several months later), that you could SERIOUSLY damage your heads by running the tape longer than 10-20 seconds. So everyone out there, please, please don’t post what you don’t know. I’ve been a part of this forum for quite some time and really enjoy it; I just don’t want to see anyone else attempt this procedure without full knowledge and possibly damaging their heads. If you are one of the fellows who has always bought sony's DVCAM tapes and want to switch to the MQ's, just run the tape cleaner for exactly how long it says, no longer. I have had perfect recording for 7 MQ tapes now.

Re: Think before you post... please..

Personally, I think way too many people are under the impression that running the head cleaner tape often is a good thing... guaranteed to stop dropouts they seem to think.

I've worked at a local CBS affiliate for several years and I can honestly say that not ONE time have I ever seen or heard of an engineer using a head cleaner tape for any camera or VTR.

They always used denatured alcohol and SPECIALLY MADE cotton swabs on long wooden dowels... NOT Q-Tip brand swabs.

They would absolutely cringe at the suggestion of using a head cleaning tape.

Re: Think before you post... please..

I need to confest, but on my first miniDV cam (JVC) for last 5 or 6 years i never did run cleaning tape. Never fill it's need it , or saw any drop outs, except when i was using on rollecoaster ride. But that time I almost got droup out by my self. Also I like topic, "Think before you post..." , want add old expression, that I don't see using any more - RTFM !

Re: Think before you post... please..

Terry... What you describe is exactly what I've been doing for years and years... back to the ole Revox days in the 70s. Regarding video, I shot 100+ tapes on my former GL-2 without one single dropout (they were Panasonic tapes, btw), using that method every 20 tapes or so. But I never run tapes more than once, and that may help too.

Re: Think before you post... please..

all true.. but on top of it i say: think before you do what you do. all the people here are human beings, they want to help, but they can make some mistakes too. there are also cases of misunderstandings... so before running a full cleaning tape, why not reading the instructions on the label?!

Re: Think before you post... please..

Remember just because it is  printed does not make it true. Do your research!! But that does sound like something someone on 2-pop would of wrote ;D ;D

Re: Think before you post... please..

Haha, thanks guys for your reply. And yes, it was partly my fault for not doing more research, i was under the influence that everyone on these boards was a god 8), and honestly it made perfect sense to run the tape thru its entire cycle if one didnt realize its potency. Im just trying to relay the message to other newbies, to 1) think before you post and make sure you know its true, 2) dont jump ontop if you are unsure about it......

long live the DVX
