I m interested in buying a nice viewing monitor 27" or so to use with my MBP for editing and color correction any suggestions? best for the money? what are some things i might not realize i need to look for in a monitor for these purposes? thanks in advance.

The ideal setup includes a video I/O interface that sends pro-level video output to a broadcast monitor. This is not a cheap setup. The MXO2 from Matrox can give you broadcast output from the MBP. After that, you'll really need to get a true broadcast monitor.

There is a less expensive approach that isn't perfect but will get you respectably close. The original Matrox MXO can take your MBP's DVI/HDMI output and can calibrate the color space to a broadcast spec for standard LCD/plasma HD displays.
