I'm planning on purchasing a DVX100A by the end of summer, and I want to know what else I need. These are the things I already have:
  • Alienware Laptop- P4 3.2 Ghz w/ HT Extreme Edition
    2 GB RAM
    60 GB Hard Drive
    External 250 GB Hard Drive
    DVD Burner
  • FireWire Cable
  • Carry Case
  • Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5
What other items should I get? Please list brands and models.

Re: Things to Buy

I've only got about 5 seconds before I have to run, but some things you might want to consider:

tripod
microphones, mixers, audio cables, etc.
lighting
stabilizing system (Dvrig Pro or Glidecam, etc)
filters - either screw-on or 4x4, in which case you would need a matte box
anamorphic adapter
wide angle lens adapter
cases/bags for all of your equipment

I'm sure I'm forgetting alot, like I said i'm in a huge hurry today. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your new DVX100. If you were mainly doing event videography, or legal videography for example, you might not need to spend the extra $$$$ on an anamorphic adaptor and matte box. If you're shooting films, commercials etc your needs will also be different. And then there's documentary shooting, etc. Hope this helps a little though.

Actually I don't think that's true anymore. With the DVX100A, they started including the massive CGR-D54, which lasts for about six hours. Having more batteries is definitely nice and recommended, but it's not quite such an urgent need anymore, like it was with the original DVX100.

Re: Things to Buy

I just bought a dvx100A a little over a month ago and it came standard with a small battery. Which is not enough. Bought two off this site and they work great

Re: Things to Buy

Go for the DVXuser battery, you can get it for like 30 cents on the dollar compared to other batteries. ;D

Re: Things to Buy

Really? Small battery? Weird. I know two guys with 100A's, bought about three-four months ago, and both of them got the CGR-D54...

Re: Things to Buy

Also it depends on how indepth in editing your gonna go..i would consider After Effects 6.5 and even Encore for burning those DVDs on your sweet laptop of yours!

I bought my DVX100A about 2 1/2 months ago and got the little small battery. I only use it as a last resort back-up....sort of like that hidden extra tape that no one knows about but me. :)

That must be new... neither of my 100A's came with the large battery.

I use the D54's exclusively. Several reasons... they power our 7" Panasonic LCD and because I have both the VF and the LCD active and that drains the batteries.

I bought all mine at EVS...

Re: Things to Buy

One of the most important things that everyone has seem to have forgotten is insurance man ! Get some good coverage ! Theres nothing like driving 60 miles or so only to be told that there will be no videotaping allowed of this event, and when you go to put your gear in the trunk, theres some spineless bastard doing a jerk - lurk about to make you his next screamin' *****. Get insured . . .
