I dont know if the HVX200 is meant to look like this or i have dvx 100 still in my mind. But the footage looks more bold and thicker. Is this because its 720p or because i set something wrong? Dont get me wrong it looks good to me. But i dont know if its meant to look like this

thanks

Can you explain that in more detail? "Thick" doesn't mean much to me. Also, it will help if you tell us what Scene File you are using, and whether you've made changes to it.

how about one still from the DVX and one from the HVX and tell us exactly where to look. That will help us better give you and answer or opinion.

I think PIMP is learning to get around with quite a bit of new gear (Lucky man). PIMP, when I started shooting footage with my HVX my first impression was exactly the same as yours. The footage looked "thicker", the colors were more vibrant, there was more contrast. It just looked better than my DVX. I haven't even taken my DVX out of it's case in awhile.

you couldnt have described it better. The colors just pop out, and thats just straight footage from the camera without color correcting. So i take it my camera is all good?

I really am loving this camera. Looks like 16mm film

thanks

When you describe the thickness of the footage you are correct in some ways. Obviously the footage is 2d and has to relative physical thickness, but the underlying video is very different from the DVX standard Def Image.

First you have more color space, or better color sampling which essentially means that more information exists on the footage about how much, and where the colors are. hvx dvc-pro HD in 720P has 4:2:2 color sampling where the DVX has 4:1:1.

Next, the Video itself has more resolution than the HVX so the sharpness increases this sense of thickness.

The panasonic imaging technology has a pretty sweet little secret sauce gamma that they apply which really goes along way towards the look you are talking about.

Also, one last thing, overexposure will increase the saturation of the colors and increase the contrast no matter what format you're shooting, it's just that the dvx and the hvx have very different tolerances for the type of image it will compress to tape (or p2) under particular situations.

Thats funny, cause I was just talking to a colorist the other day about certain codecs and their tolerances for adjustment and the term thickness and thinness popped up a bunch.
