These Zcam guys are killing it!!

That plugin's interface looks similar to how REDCODE works in FCP X...I hope they don't get too overzealous, but they really are making incredible progress.

Anyone know why so few of Panasonic lenses are compatible with the Z-Cam E2?

Supported Lenses:

Panasonic Lumix 14mm f/2.5 G
Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH
Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 ASPH
Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. POWER O.I.S.
Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH.
Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens
Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S.
Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f/2.8-4 ASPH.
Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S
Lumix G X Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Power O.I.S.

Sometimes "supported" means "these are the ones we've tested" unless it's clear many lenses don't work and only these do.

I would reach out to them and ask if it's not noted anywhere.

Small companies with the right leadership can iterate much faster than big companies- iteration rate is key to making great products. Smaller companies have to release more often, where users are effectively beta testers, however when the company reacts quickly to issues/deficiencies, the long term results provide great value for the end user. Looks like Z Cam is on the right track.

But that same process can breed resentment... "I just bought your stinking camera and now you have a new one that fixes all the issues and want me to buy it again?"

It's a slippery slope if you don't keep taking care of those "beta tester" owners with at least a decent trade in value or keep fixing what they have until it works within the limits of the hardware. The last one is what Fuji has been doing with their cameras for the last several generations, that old camera isn't simply stopped at the point when they release new cameras, they keep adding features and making fixes for a good long time.

It seemed like Red got in at a good time. They were able to offer a revolutionary product, and had upgrade paths that seemed to help majority of their “beta” tester customers.

With how small margins are now, i don’t know how the companies can take care of those customers anymore, but perhaps that doesn’t matter at the ultra low end. Camera quality has plateaued enough that people don’t care the way they used to.

(Side note, i don’t think camera quality has plateaued, just the improvements are less quantifiable)

I bought an E2, but don’t have anything to share just yet. I’m an editor mainly, not a working DP, and was looking to buy a Pocket 4K for my own projects. Went for this instead.

Also, their Facebook group is active and where most of the action takes place. I think I’ve seen Erik on there. The CEO is super active as are their main tech guys. It’s a pain to find info on there, but if you are interested in the camera, I’d suggest joining.

Hoju, what is the best slomo footy you have seen from the zcams?

I’ve been able to get the F55 to compare well to the F35 as a slomo camera. But might be nice to have more of a “stunt” slomo camera.

But honestly - not sure anyone would be able to tell a difference between this and a Pocket or GH5, etc. The video quality starts to look the same after a while, and it's the main features (AF, IBIS) and ergonomics and accessories (lenses, power, media) that differentiate cameras more than ever.

Definitely. For me, it was a combo of raw / ProRes, modular body, and frankly, a soft spot for underdogs and mavericks.

What is the HDMI output format on the Z Cam E2?

This doesn't seem to be listed in the technical specs on the website or in the manual. Can it output 4K60 over HDMI? Can it do 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI output?

it's HDMI 2.0 up to 4K 60 out. 4:2:2 10bit.

Yeah was referring to continual improvements of the same product.
