These Scene Files drive me mad!

Hi,

I'm new to my AF101 and these scene files are driving me mad.

I can't seem to find a coherent list of the default scene files and their features and benefits. Are they any good?

I'm thinking of using the Cine V for day to day corporate work but it seems a bit noisy. Is that normal? Is it useless?

I often shoot with a Canon 5D guy, but the scene file I tried for that lacked detail and seemed a little fuzzy!

Help! Please!!

I've gone through and tested lots of settings for different jobs and situations and found two settings to cover most of the situations with small tweaks as I go by.

The first is based on Cinelike V gamma and the other on Cinelike D. The first one for a contrasty look with punchy colours. The other with a wider dynamic range and toned down colours/contrast. Neither is particular noisy.

First one:
Cinelike V gamma
Norm2 matrix
All other settings at neutral but I do change detail and colour depending on how I want it to look.

Second one:
Cinelike D gamma
Norm2 matrix
All other settings at neutral but I do change detail and colour depending on how I want it to look.

As for the noise, I find that a black balance often helps. I now have a practice of black balancing everytime I change scene files or recording formats - noise really isn't an issue anymore. I also have the Detail Coring bumped up a few clicks.

To understand your new camera.....Go back to default setting for all the scene files and then do some tests. Lots of tests.

Use a properly calibrated hi quality HD monitor direct from the camera to evaluate what you are doing and seeing.

Scene files at default (out of the box) are excellent starting points... but if you dont understand and know them... you will be chasing your tail forever.

Thanks so much everyone. It's good to know the default scene files are generally an OK place to start.

I do black balance when I change lenses, but not scene files. I didn't realise that was a necessity. I'll give it a go and see if that helps.

I'm seeing compression artifacting in the blacks even at 200 ISO, so it's a bit of a strange one.

@ Editman, thanks a lot for your settings. They helped me a lot since I bought an AF101 a couple of days ago.
I tweaked them a bit and I think that matrix Norm1 helps in reducing artifacts.

Here are my settings:
Details -5 o -4
Coring +2
Chroma -4 o -3
Pedestal 0
Gamma CineV
Matrix Norm1

All my tests have been done with an atomos ninja and I still have not recorded any file in camera, so I don't know how the avchd compression would affect noise

Hope this helps,
Diego

There is actually less noise recording internally to the SD cards. In order for avchd to compress files, it ignores the fine moise level detail. Wwith ninja you do gain better color space though.
