then again, noise

Hello, again
I just received my cam and Im surprised of the grain volume in my footage. I know, I know,I'm not the first one to ask those questions. Neither will I be the last one... I'm just a director with a loat of knowledge in teoretical digitall image but allmost none in practicall. So, I need help. Nope, I dont have barry greens book yet, hopefully I will have it soon.
I need help whether I will have to change my scene files in order to get no noise footage / even my sunny days are full of it... or to work it in post... hmmmm....
Otherwise, Ive just seen a very very good movie called Iklimler / distant- shot on f900 cinealta / indie style project cannes oficial selection 2007. And it was excelent. I was just wondering. How far/close is my hvx technically related to that f900 thing...
Thanks
Stefan

and then. Ive shot everything in film and there everything underexposed wasnt grainy... I cant undesrtand why underexposed is grainy... thats a bit too much. grainy should come when you push it afterwards... I mean you have 320 asa film and you rate it 500 to get exposure...
Sorry for bad english
See you,
Stefan

try taking it off the all the "Cinelike" settings. they are the grainiest. then experiment with what you find acceptable. I'm a "B.Press" man myself.

Iklimler and Distant are two different movies by the same director, Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

Distant (aka Uzak) was shot on film, Iklimler (Climates) was shot on the f900.

Hi Stefan:

I agree with Zak, using B-Press or HD settings will reduce grain as will lighting the image correctly. But the HVX is not and never will NOT grainy, it's part and parcel for how the HVX looks. For those looking for a cleaner image, I recommend the Sony EX-1, I did a shoot with four of them last week and the picture is much cleaner and much more video like. I happen to like how both cameras look, they are just very different looks.

You cannot fairly compare the pictures between a $5,000.00 prosumer camera like the HVX with a $100,000.00 camera like the F900. The F900 is in a much different league.

Best,

Dan

IMHO...there is no doubt that the HVX 200 isn't in the same league as the 900. But the 900 isn't 20 times as good related to the price difference.
And as others have said so well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :)

ive seen a clip, barry green posted on this forum, shooting a grey-card with so much less noise in underexposure, just as well as ive listened to different topics having the same discussion and claiming a blowup to 35mm from the hvx would look so clean on the big screen, and that noise isnt a problem at all. after this ive watched all these different clips, in various lighting conditions, shot with even less lighting, and an adapter on top (cutting from 05. to 2.5 stops of light) and still they didn't look grainy...

i know all of this was never shown on full resolution, and i myself have never watched a blowup, but...i dont imagine grain in the -1 stop underexposure area is something right? after all cinematography consists in light and shadow, if shadow looks miserable, what should you do with the hvx, light it dully and full?

or, is just everybody holding this big secret on scene files, or on some other noise removal software in post?

Hello again,

Ahm yeap you were right, Distant is something and Climates is another movie.
I just cant get a good hold on turkish. Ive seen both, and, in my opinion Climates looked better.

I know, Ive seen a loat of the hvx ex1 fight. I know is a important topic, yeah as you said its got clean image but with a cost... the video cost... Nevertheless I cant, dont wanna buy another cam now. And the 3d look of the ex1 (this is no offense to any of you owners, its more a matter of taste) isnt quite what I need. Although I like the fact that its got no grain...

I wont be doing weddings, tv series with the hvx. I bought it for documentaries and, right now, for short films... Thats what I intend to do with it... So, blow up is a possibility, and yeap what looks grainy will look gigantic on screen....

I cant expect you to solve my case, I just need a bit of guidance, I know one issue involves many others: grain - lights- taste options - yes/no big screen blow up.

Thanks for all,
Stefan

Drop the master pedestal a bit and USE "LOW" or "B.PRESS" for a cleaner image. Also, crush the blacks a bit in post. Makes a big difference!

Also, lowering the detail coring setting may help overcome noise somewhat, depending on the setting...
