Hey all--

Just wrapped up the color grade on our project, "The Worble". We ran around for one day with a 5D MK III and a TS3 Cine, shooting anywhere from 60fps to 718 FPS. Here are the results!

Glass used was an old set of Nikon primes for the TS3 and a few L series lenses for the 5D stuff. Edited in FCP7, Graded with Color Finesse, Optical Flares, Red Giant Denoiser II, and the grain was from looks.

Thanks for watching.

I made it to 58 seconds, Not that it was bad, it was actually very good. I honestly get bored with skateboard vids though. But if skate boarding is your thing, I imagine it never gets boring, pretty much like surfing vids are for me, just cant get enough.

I'm curious as to why you went with such a nostalgic flat washed out look. I wouldn't call it a bleach bypass, but close, I guess without as much silver retention. Maybe im way off. I'm seeing this style more and more though. I'm still not sure if I like it yet, my first impression is why didn't they raise the contrast a bit and make the blacks a bit more punchy. But as we know color grading is very subjective. And it really doesn't even have to work for the story, it's nothing more than a styleistic choice. How do you like the 5d3?

How did you shoot at 718 FPS on a 5D Mark III?

As someone else already said--the TS3 shoots 718FPS. We rented it--it's a pretty decent option price wise for getting that kind of FPS right out of the can vs renting a Phantom or Epic or whatever else. You can rent it from rule.com in Boston. The camera isn't without it's quirks--but most high speed cameras seem to require their own special babysitting practices. Both this camera and the Phantom HD Gold require nearly constant black balancing between shots and temperature changes.

If I had to do it over again I'd add more movement to all the high speed shots. I originally wanted to shoot it all with just really nice framing and composition and leave the camera alone, but now I think super slow mo is best served if you can add at the very minimum just a little bit of movement and parallax.

Thanks for the reply. 58 seconds isn't bad on the average online video viewing retention I guess ;p

Well, I knew from the start that the director wanted this kind of look. Most of the stuff we do together ends up with a 2.35:1 crop, and raised blacks with a little blue in them. This one I went a little extreme on--you should've seen the original grade...it was super duper milky in the blacks. I guess we are trying more to replicate a "flashing" the film stock. It's a look we both like but it's definitely firmly within the zeitgeist right now. It's purely a stylistic thing.

On a side note, I was having a conversation yesterday while building some frames and mattes for a photographer yesterday, about how refreshing it was to work with something physical. I shoot onto a card, put the card into my computer, pass it through FCP and AE, and then upload something to vimeo. The closest thing to something physical that I touch that has to do with the image is trying to shape the light.

I definitely crave working with a more physical medium these days. Its why I see more and more people shoot 8mm, and why I think the Rhonda cam will probably sell well. I just miss that feeling of working with film and I think grades like this maybe reflect those inner desires to work with something a little more charming and imperfect than a CMOS chip. Two years ago I would've crushed my blacks and shifted my gamma till everything popped. Now I do this look quite frequently. Not sure what to say besides it's a look and we like it!

The 5D3 is great. I occasionally run into skin tone problems and find myself doing custom white balances much more than I ever did on the MKII. Full frame 60FPS is nice for b-roll shots, and at least having the option of hearing the audio I'm recording has been sorely missed. I do a lot of interviews and have a zoom hanging off my rails that is recording but also feeding to the 5D. I monitor from the 5D and have a clean signal recorded in to the camera and also onto the zoom. On the stills side the new AF is awesome.

I quite enjoyed it. Nice slow motion shots.

Thanks man!

Quality looks bad, to much noise/grain + out of focus. I also agree I don;t like the color correction either. I got into about 10-15sec, just didn't grab me. What really threw me off was how poor it looked and the choice of music.
