The Water's Edge - Part 2 (and 2 1/2)

Okay, here's more from the lake. This is a work in progress but I thought I'd share it anyway. No real fancy moves in this one although there is a glidecam sequence.

Sit back and enjoy:

This is shorter than the first one and is about 20mb

I also put a short comedy piece together for fun:

***By the way, if you get an error page the first time, try refreshing it. I don't know what's up with my ISP but that seems to do the trick.

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2

Nice photography, looks great.

A thought, in the time lapse of the sky would it work to do an effects dissolve between the sky and the tree in the forground and showing the tree in real time (assuming you sped this up in post)? Its such a smooth scene with the exception of the foreground trre shaking so much.

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2

I like them both, is the score original for the second one as well?

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2

Congrats again! It looks sooo good. The dragonfly shot is really great...just one question...

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2

very very nice. Looks like you have alot of friendly neighbors :)
question: did you use a high shutter speed at the beginning with the water drop?

Awesome work!!! Amazing. Your nature phtography is amazing.

Could you give us a few details of the camera settings and what kind of lighting you used.

Thanks

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2

Thanks again. I made some tighter edits to it last night and re-uploaded...very subtle.

Questions, questions...okay let me try to answer them.
ChuckS, I know what you mean about the tree but I'm going to leave it as is. The whole point of what I am doing is not to use effects, aside from time distortion.

The score for this one is not original it's from a music library. ...not mentioning who until I pay for it  ;)

Yes, I love living in the Garden of Eden  ;D

I used a very high shutter speed for the raindrop at the beginning: 1/1000

There is no artificial lighting in any of these pieces, I rely solely on the sun and its moods.

The settings were all over the map. I did not use the same settings for all of the shots so I would advise you to go back and see what I posted in the original Water's Edge thread.

I think I've covered everything...

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2 (and 2 1/2)

Wow. What more can I say?

I find your work to be incredibly inspiring. All of your footage looks so much like film that I'm completely blown away. You've helped me see just how good footage from the DVX has the potential to be.

Thanks! ;D

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2 (and 2 1/2)

good job I must say,
just one question: how did you get the shot of floating camera in the shot with the green bush. it was the shot right after the little birdies feeding. Loved the motion on the bush shot..very fluent and dynamic. pls share the secret ;D

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2 (and 2 1/2)

The "secret" is that I used a fast shutter speed (1/500) with a glidecam and then slowed it down to 50%. I mapped out the shot first, I knew I wanted that last fluid sweep to transition into the next shot.

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2 (and 2 1/2)

I found it really cool and organic..love those kinda shots..
Btw do you plan on releasing a collection of those nature movies on dvd or is it just for your home use??

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2 (and 2 1/2)

Good question. The first segment (the original Water's Edge) has copyrighted music so I could never sell that. It would break the bank just to pay the royalties so that's just for me.

The others are from an affordable music library so I could potentially do something with those. I'm not sure who this would appeal to, to be honest. I know that nature films have a universal appeal but I need to put more structure into what I am doing. These films are the beginning of something much more elaborate that has a point to make.

Certainly the people who live on my lake have been blown away when they see "their" lake shown on a 50" plasma and, for all intents and purposes, they can't tell the difference between that and a film shot on 35mm. So from a local perspective it has changed the way people look at the lake wildlife and has made them a little bit more aware that they can do something to preserve what we have here. It's nice to make that kind of impact on people.

Beyond where I live? Who knows....I'm working on a master plan for a longer film that I will eventually take on the film festival circuit. There's not many independent filmmakers doing what I am doing so I suppose that's a good thing.

That's all I can tell you right now.

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2 (and 2 1/2)

you can sell it to your tourism board ( maybe not directly were you live, but nearby, so it stays quiet). you can also sell it to stock-footage companies to get some bucks in.

Re: The Water's Edge - Part 2 (and 2 1/2)

The stuff in your "2 1/2" video with the birds timed to the music and such reminded me a little bit of the documentary "Winged Migration." If you haven't seen it yet, you should definitely check it out. It isn't exactly action-packed, but the cinematography and technique are brilliant.

Like you said, with some more structure and content, you could find a wider appeal for this kind of movie (beyond your neighborhood, at least). For some reason, it's kind of relaxing to watch birds moving about. But maybe I'm weird.
