DOC: "The Volunteer DragonSlayers"

It's time I had my own passion project after working on hundreds of other people's film and projects.

This project has been over 6 months in the making, so let me first share the video (on Vimeo) that I shot for the Kickstarter Campaign that is currently running:

Now to share the "why":

Some of you know, that I have lived an interesting life, and that all started with me being a Volunteer Firefighter (San Bernardino Co Fire, Fresno County Fire).

Those experiences molded and shaped my life, even now there are situation I face that I fall back on the lessons I learned then. But I always wanted a way to give back to the Volunteer Firefighting community, as they are usually overlooked when it comes to being recognized for their self-less and tireless serving of their neighbors.

So, "The Volunteer Dragonslayers" was born as a way to give these brave men and women some much needed exposure.

The project will consist of 2 parts, running concurrently, as I travel the United States, embedding with Volunteer fire departments to tell their stories, and show their experiences, and given the reader/viewer a first person look of what they face. I will be suiting up and riding the engines right alongside these American Heroes. This project is allowing me to come full circle in life, and return to my roots and to a special place in my life.

The first part is a coffeetable book about these volunteers, and how they face dangers, and balance that with regular jobs and family life. The second part is a documentary, being directed by another DVX member, BLT.

We are getting some pretty good feedback on the project, and a lot of interest from Volunteer Departments. Our plan is to visit 10-15 different departments over the next year to give a balanced cross-section of the US.

The emotional aspect of this for me personally, is strong, and my passions have re-ignited.

Should you have an interest in the project, feel free to contact me via PM. Should you want to assist with the Kickstarter, PM me as well. And a deep special thanks go out to the DVXUsers that have already pledged support.

I feel so energized.

Ugh, this is hard work. Kickstarter/fund raising. Lots of "support" but not much concrete. 16 days left and only 650 out of 5500 pledged.

That's an awesome idea, and people doing this work definitely deserve it. I haven't volunteered with a department (partly due to budget cuts when I tried), but I am medically trained and have helped people at the side of the road. I understand how stressful it can get to have everyone on scene staring, waiting for you to fix everything, and how rewarding it can be. I have a lot of respect for the people who make the time to do this. If you ever end up in the SF Bay Area or further North and need help, let me know.

So, for this shoot, the photo equipment:

Nikon D60 (my bang around camera)
2 Nikon D1x's (My sacrificial cameras. Metal bodies......pretty robust in the abuse column, but low res.)
D7000 for those detail shots
Potentially a D3 from my press agency
3 speedlights
18-55mm
35-70mm
55-200mm
80-300mm
500mm
Set of rectilinear Nikon prime lenses (getting next week from someone donating them)
Tripod

On the vid aspect.....5DmkII with lenses, my audio gear (LOL, knew this was gonna happen), interview lighting kit.

From this project, I picked up a paid gig filming a recruitment vid for a fire department back east. Kinda cool.

I personally want to thank DVXUsers for their contributions to my Kickstarter! You guys rock! I would love to thank you publicly, but want to make sure that is cool. Expect a PM from me asking.

Don't forget to use the Updates part of Kickstarter. Not only good for your backers, but also to leave a public history for future backers of future projects you Kickstart.

After a diversion from a department that wanted to hire us to film their Recruitment vid, but they didn't understand how the biz works...........I am proud to announce we are going on assignment the second week of October. Yeah, you say "finally". I agree. Been sitting here chomping at the bit. But flights are now booked. And I promise some amazing pictures! They are arranging some training "burns" for me to document.

Well, we are at our first Volunteer Fire Department this week! About as opposite the country as you can get from Southern California.....up here in Winter Harbor, Maine. Already had my first Maine lobster, and it was a monster! The fire department up here has really welcomed us with open arms, and have given us unprecedented access. Only have been here two days and we have already shot over 12 hours worth of footage and interviews and over 600 images.

Here's a couple pics:_D7K7960-2.jpg_D7K7980-2.jpgDSC_5681-2.jpg_D7K7983-2.jpgDSC_5593-2.jpg

A little "car-b-que" action. I was in full SCBA gear/turnouts, with camera for this pic. As I don't shoot "selfie's" someone is sending me pics she shot of me. This is not the best pic in the series for this, but those are for the book and will not be released online.

It's been a while since I have been on here on DVXUser.....been extremely busy.

Last night, we premiered "The Volunteer DragonSlayers" to a packed house (we had to rent 50 more chairs due to it was only a 350 seat theater) here in Los Angeles at the Crest Theater.

The response was humbling, to say the least. A standing ovation. And this was only the "Proof of Concept" with a run time of 16 minutes......here's to the future and the 15 more episodes at 30 min each.
