Some of you may be interested to hear that the Viper and HVX are cutting together quite nicely.
I just finished shooting a short western thriller called "Scorp" in the high desert mountains across from Mt. Whitney. I chose the Viper primarily because of the 2:37 aspect ratio and uncompressed color space. I shot in "filmstream" or (log) mode @ 440 megabytes to an HDCAM-SR 1 field deck.
We also used the HVX-200 as sort of a "POV" camera... the logic behind this choice was that the main character is buried up to his waste in a dry lake bed and left to die after being beaten (so my thoughts were that his state of mind would be somewhat in line with a comparison between the Viper footage and the HVX).... a little off, right?
Well we downconverted the log HDCAM-SR directly to harddrive as DVC-PRO HD 1080 23.98 and imported it into Final Cut Pro along with the HVX-200 footage which was shot/captured at 1080.
The footage is being viewed through a KONA 3 (via HD-SDI) into the new 26" Panasonic HD/LCD monitor.... and I've got to tell you that I the difference between the footage isn't nearly what I expected. In fact it's difficult to tell at times. I know, because I shot it... but others who were even on set while shooting are puzzled.
Having said that. We are watching the VIPER footage REALLY downrezzed... and I'm sure that on a 40" screen, fully uncompressed, the difference will be very evident... but it's still very very impressive that the HVX is holding up even under these circumstances.
cheers,
