The Video/Digital Cinema News Cycle is Eating Itself?

I find it interesting that at least on my DVXUser feed, this is one of the only threads that is actually getting any discussion or updates. Haven't really seen any discussions about equipment or technique that have sustained in the past few weeks. Post Cine Gear, I think things are going to be REALLY quiet here for the Summer. It's always slower here in the Summer but this year may reach new heights of slowness.

This is a "passing-by" thread. It's general enough to swing the conversation and keep it going.

All of the major news sites post about something new everyday but not everything needs a forum discussion.

The decline of overall conversations here (besides arguing) is mostly related to the decline of forums.

And a down-vote right on cue sums it up. lol

And it's wondered why no one posts anymore.

(BTW, the other thread has 40% of posts with at least 1.)

Poor illiterate souls.

ha, I'm always chilling. There was actually a thread about DVXuser on REDuser years ago that's worth a look.

I want to believe that is a mis-click. When I see innocuous posts get down voted it leaves me wondering why they got down voted. Like your post; there is nothing even faintly off-putting about that post. I'm always willing to learn new viewpoints. I'd like to hear from the person that down voted that post.

ha, I get down-voted at least 10-20 times a week for barely anything.

It comes with the territory.

But I truly get more aggravated seeing other people (especially ones that don't post much) get down-voted for simply sharing their honest thoughts just because someone disagrees.

I don't think I've ever down-voted or up-voted any post. For a long time I didn't even pay attention to that feature. I guess I was aware of it but never saw any use for it personally and forgot about it being there.

Seeing how the latest Mac is being talked about. Seems like mac made a good computer, but the price is too high.

The difference with cameras is, that there isn’t a good video camera at any price. The Sony F55 is close to perfect.

Feels like there are several perfect stills cameras.

Ergonomics are personal, but stills cameras have incorporated acceptable ergonomics on a number of dslr’s.

ENG bodies are too big for modern filmaking, which requires gimbal compatibility. But ENG bodies prove there is a possiblt semi unversal ergonomics to video cameras.

Mirrorless cameras try to be compact, as that is one of the selling points over dslr, however, mirrorless bodies suffer ergonomically.

I bet if everyone on this thread listed what they waned in a camera, the lists would end up being very similar:

- Global shutter
- 12+ stops dynamic range and 10bit 422 or better
- ~4K resolution
- iso3200 clean, 6400 pushed but very useable
- good color science
- built in ND (a need for video, because of shutter speeds)
- auto focus, even if you never use it
- physical controls for exposure, wb, and ND
- ergonomics at least similar to a dslr, except perhaps more slant to the right hand grip.
- improved connectivity with external devices. (Since we aren’t getting complete cameras like eng days, let’s have real solutions to connectivity)

Those are specs we can all agree on, and yet there is not a camera like it that exists.

"ENG Bodies" are more useful for general purpose production "filmaking", in my opinion. And bodies for gimbals, much more specialized, less useful, less used. But, hey, that's me. Why would I want to buy a camera that is a huge compromise for 95% of what I do?

Give me my 2700 body with s35 6K(to get good 4K) global shutter sensor with clean ISO out to 6400 and the rest is damn near perfect as it stands. I would make some more tweaks, but we'd almost be "there".

Cause a stir over there by creating a thread titled "Resolution is overrated."

Lol. I sorta did that a few weeks ago after someone posted that "article" about RED being the most used camera for Netflix shows. Even Jarred got in on it after that.

It's probably a good thing they don't have an Up/Down Vote system... ; )

You are preaching to the choir here! Yeah, i love a good ENG camera.

They will most likely always be specialized for pro work in certain segments. Whereas a smaller 1DC sized body could be more universally accepted.

But even you can admit it is nice to have both body styles. So, that is all the list is saying, there are features we can all agree on, and yet we have never seen a camera like that ever, no matter the price range. Seems odd doesn’t it?

Morgan brought up something the other day about "DSLR" bodies. I could even be down with them in certain instances(like down 'n dirty b-roll that still needs to look good) IF they had REAL EVF'S that tilted/swiveled probably 120-130 degrees. As much as I dislike it(body/ergonomics), the C300 could have been so much more(especially for b-roll) IF they had just given it a good(read: REAL) EVF.

Needs depend a lot on the kind of production, size of crew, etc. If you gave me an F55, I would hardly ever use it: too big, too heavy, and requiring everything else in the gear list to become bigger and heavier. But of course, I'm just a hobbyist who spends way more time on his hobby than most people would find reasonable... XD

Nice! So, you also agree with the list. Yes, majority of shooters prefer a smaller lighter option. Even if they end up rigging later. But the odd thing is, how awful connectivity is with more small body cameras.

You may be willing to sacrifice ease of use and image wuality for size and weight. And i may be willing to deal with weight for a more complete camera system and image quality. However, at the end of the days we both are moving towards the same general philosophy. The only thing is, they do not make the camera yet. In fact they may even be intentionally not making the camera. I don’t believe they are intentionally withoholding, i just think they are stuck in their ways, and not able to solve the solution that most of us see clearly.

One of the issues, is us though. We constantly muddy the argument saying all the individual features we want, and it sounds like we all disagree and have SUCH PERSONAL TASTE in camera design.... news flash: we don’t!

Camera design features and ergonomics are pretty much the same for all of us.

Hypothetically speaking from the design point of view, one could build either a modular model a la Red or a camcorder -- or a modular camcorder, for that matter -- in any shape for any application. It'd mostly depend on the sensor size but even that is becoming irrelevant as the new Samsung and Sony 1/2" sensors have 32-48 MPX of resolution with a pretty decent low light performance. Tack on a lens and whatever else one might want and that's your ENG camera that will fit on a selfie stick.

And, to do a cinema version, a one inch or an MFT camcorder - think GH-5S with a built in 12-60 F 2.8 with a body of DVX 200, C200 or XF-705, take your pick - would suffice. It won't be in competition with Alexa but you'll still get lovely looking images.

And they'll take stills too.

You are talking about options and possibilities. No camera manufacturer has made an essential camera design yet.

JVC survey...for a new cinema camera.

http://pro.jvc.com/survey

This is a BS survey. It is written for and by industry sales people:

- what market segment are you in?
- what resolution do you shoot in
- do you need EF mount?

If these are their questions, then they are so out of touch and clueless about camera design. Again, sales people making a survey for camera design. Ridiculous.
