Another sign that our field is maturing is that I can just reply to new threads with links to my old comments, http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?346893-future-proof&p=1986635042&viewfull=1#post1986635042.
There are a few things that I still await and still some room for manufacturers to distinguish themselves:
1. Uncompressed RAW recording. The new CFexpress standard makes this possible in camera, even at 4K and high frame rates. The advantage is peace of mind, knowing that: (a) I could not have chosen a better codec. I don't agonize over the bitrate or fiddle with menus choosing it. I just always record uncompressed RAW. (2) I don't have to worry about my footage being unreadable in a few decades. The technology is here, we're just waiting for prices to fall. 1 hour of 4K RAW is a terabyte. When a 1TB CFexpress card is $50, we can stop using camera codecs.
2. Global shutter. Fast read-outs have improved things, but when it is finally purely global then we won't have to ponder special circumstances.
3. Ergonomics, simpler controls, longer battery life. Whenever a thread turns toward the future of cameras, people joke about some mind-reading flying camera with lasers. But my ideal is always a return to the straightforward simplicity of the original Leica. My ideal is not more but less, and the controls that are left are so well-designed that the connection from my brain, through my hands, to the camera is transparent.

It's only affecting that part of the industry.
The creativity is at an all-time high. People can be so talented if you provide them the right technology & tools.
Cameras are exremely awful. Who here has one they actually like?
ND (or 6 ISO) ? missing from all small camera
Simple handling and ergonomics? MOstly terrible
Menues? Always horrific
Solid mount points? Mostly Missing.
App/Controls? Always awful
Build in lav recievers, Vision transmitters? No
Controls? Either give me four knobs ISO WB Shutter and FrameRate.. or let me really delve and write my own configurations.
For example Id like to write a custom configuration that you define the focus distance limits. I spent loads of time messing with water housings.. an unltil I went to manual focus the focus would dance between infinity, the subject and drips on the housing front. If I could have locked AF from 2-3m I would have been golden.
Oh and Id like 4:3 monitors where the info was under the actual image.
Industrial design, and deep testing has gone out of the window.
I absolutely love my VariCams. Even though my newest ones are roughly eight years old, from a user standpoint, they blow anything else I’ve touched in the last five years away,
Personally I like cameras of low mass doing lots of gimbals and mounts so I would not want a full eng camera.
Got a rental FS5 in at the mo.. so light.. but that is my point.. the 2/3 cams are designed for using professionally whereas todays cameras seem to have been designed by interns or bloggers or have had critical flaws included to make one desire the next 'upgrade' in the line.
Ive got so cross with my FS7 that Ive thought about finding a 2/3 camera for shoulder work![]()
(ref 2/3) I have reasonable control over DoF with built-in ND.
Y Cameras are better these days. ..Once RAW video shows up ..

But that is part due to wanting small bodies and part to ... whatever. In other words, the ergonomics problems can be solved overnight, if there's a desire to solve them. Or, at least, the desire to make every camera heavily customizable to the user preferences.... But ultimately todays cameras fall down on ergonomics, user interface and flimsy cables every where...
No. It isn't that you shoot 4K Raw video and edit in Resolve. It's that you shoot 4K Raw and edit in Resolve for $1,300 US. (at least, in the US, one could do it for $1,300 + lenses, media, etc.)... Nowadays, I just shoot RAW on a p4k and edit in Resolve ...

but we're getting very close... My p4k
That's what I meant. A decade ago, F 35 was $250,000 and now we're yawning at a 6K S1H for ~ $4,000. In the next couple of months, Sony will probably reveal an 8K consumer camera for about the same price. It'll be followed by more compelling arguments about the Applle Cheese Grater.... In terms of having the perfect camera, I agree we're not there yet, but we're getting very close. My p4k gives me super sharp RAW video with prety good DR, and yes, it does so for what not that many years ago would have been a laughably low price...
