The Unknown Girl of the Public Bench [8' - french]

WOW, that was actually amasing cinematography. His final CU on the road was breathtaking. The whole story was told really well.
Cheers
Steve

wow, excellent work... the 'score' was a perfect fit for the story... the flowing piano strings...
amazing cinematography too...
i assumed you shot it with a dvx100 -100a since it was on this forum, until i looked at your original post about using the sony DSR-570.

once again, excellent work!!!

I am so amazed by this work. The only word that describe this short is "beautiful". Very good job, keep up the good work. I can't crticise something so brilliant.

The windows were really blown out at the beginning with the longer shots and then less blown out later, was that done on purpose or just different days/times of shooting and therefor you got some friendlier lighting outside?
We shot in the end of december, in the south of France. The sunset was about 8 am and the sunset about 4.30 pm, so the lightning conditions were very difficults. Sometimes it was sunny, sometimes it was very cloudy, so, in 3 days, we saw too many differents lightning conditions. We hadn't many lightings on the set (one blond, two spot) so the result is the outside is very white when we are in the office.
But we didn't change the light outside, it's natural, but the color process helped to "sublimise" it !

Finally some good opening credits. Extremely well done, and with purpose, especially when all the sketch lines form the bench.

I think the best lighting and frame-make-up is when he is extremely back-lit by the window and holds the sketch up to the girl on the bench, then stands up and puts it on the board with all the other sketches.

I will comment on the rest later.

Demo Reel

Demo Reel

Hi again !

If your are interested in Post-Production, here is a demo reel of the color process (Original Shot, then Combustion process and then Lustre process) and other stuff like using SteadyMove to improve the motion travelling in the short-movie.

No comments, only music, less than 4 min length, it's big (60 Mo) and in DivX but it's the way to see the differences in full resolution !

It's 1.07 pixel aspect ratio, as we shot, but you can use BSPlayer if you want to see it in 16/9.

All questions are welcome !

Awesome! Downloading now!

Hey can you explain how you did the opening credits animation? I love how the image draws out.

The opening sequence

The opening sequence

For coffee & UncleBenji1977 :

The opening sequence : first of all, I scaned (high-res) a real textured paper that I modified on Photoshop. Then, I scaned (high-res too, more than 20.000 pixels) one of the drawing we see in the short movie.
After that, I did a manual TGA sequence with the drawing : I erased a little bit of the frame and save it as a new picture. So I started by the end.
Then, I "backwarded" the sequence and "slowed" it (that result the impression of drawing on the frame).
In After Effect, I put my final sequence on the high-res textured paper, and did a composition with the names & title, the camera movement, the lightning, etc...
For the clock, I take one real frame of it, then I transformed it in drawing in Photoshop and I did a new TGA sequence, erasing the clock.
Final composition : what you saw ! :)

For disjecta :

I don't know that forum was only for DVX Users... We can see topics about Sony & Canon so why not share our work in order to learn from each other ? The camcorder do not do the movie !

I just meant this particular area is for DVX-only films...there is another area for Sony stuff. I'm not excluding anyone's work

Well, I'm sorry, a french / newbie mistake... :undecided :embarasse

Great short film, Arakneed. Felicitations.

I refind the spirit of the famous Lodz cinema school ("Pocaluj mnie w dupe" as the great Roman said sometimes).

I especially liked the original music. Benjamin Martinez is really gifted.

Keep on doing your great works (whatever the area you post !! (just kidding Disjecta))

I thought this was really, really well done. I enjoyed it very much and I was very impressed with the opening credits as well. Very professional. Thanks for sharing.

Matt
