The Ultimate homemade jib design with a twist

Ok, so I'm feeling creative these days, after building a cheap and dirty camera dolly this past weekend that by the way works awesome. I decided it needs the ultimate accessory, a Jib.

So I got to thinking and came up with a design but addeda twist. Click here for drawing

Check it out and please feel free to share your thoughts. I plan to build one at first to see if it works, then maybe I might see how much it will cost to make them for sale.

Hey Ray,

That looks like a good design - the steerable panning handlebars are interesting.

It might be nice if you had a bowl on the end for a fluid head on a ball to allow for tilts.

Have you ever seen the Advanta-Jib? They have some interesting controlling mechanisms incorporating hydraulics and cables for control of the head.

I'm definitely interested in seeing pics of it completed.

thanks for sharing,

Glad you though it was worth a look. As for the ball, anything is possible. I'm really trying to get the smoothest operation for the least amount of money. So there will be a limit. To help make things operate smoothly I due plan to use bushings to make the up down action smooth. I even though of ading a stabilazer piston to make it raise and lower smoothly while holding position. Right now its just in the design stage and I'm looking for input from this forum before I get started. I plan to get started building a cheap proto type this weekend.

As for the Advanta-Jib I never heard of it. For ticket items that costs big $$$, I usually skip right by them for something I can realisticly afford or build. I like building less expensive stuff thats gets the job done, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet though and go for it :)
