i have read this on cinema5d forum:
http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3592&start=10&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

i have also seen same videos in wich is present this problem.
the problem is:
during recording and - after-during playback the image appears to freeze momentarily and then jumps ahead.
can sameone says a final word about this problem.?
i have read a lot of supposition but not the truth.
is this a camera's native problem without solution or is this generated to bad setting and use of 5d?
thanks

I noticed it when I used the 28-135 IS lens. Whenever I zoomed the image would hang.

I think, however, it was because my friend was using the camera and it was set to stills instead of video display.

I think I saw it yesterday but I'm not sure if I was seeing something else. No longer using the 28-135 IS, I haven't really seen it since. It's probably a matter of camera settings and/or Image Stabilization as there are two people that did settings reset and it fixed the "issue".

I have never dealt with the stills mode in liveview. But I have had this issue with slower cards, I use the 28-135 often and hadn't had the issue. It happened every once in a while with my 16GB kingston, but has never happened with my 32GB kingston. Though they both claim to be 133x, the 32GB is consistently speedier.

I looked through the cinema5d thread and agree that it also happens with Auto white balance on.

I'm using Extreme III Cards myself. I still have the 28-135 ,I'll go and try out the zooming again while recording to see if it freezes the image.

I've gotten a few of these as well. I rented a 5D for the week and have been testing it a lot - not technical tests, just practical stuff to see how I like the camera and the post workflow (24p conversion, audio sync, etc). Anyway, I'm getting the dropped frames with Nikon primes in manual mode - no image stabilization or zooming to speak of. Can't seem to isolate what's doing it. I am using the 16gb Kingston Elite Pro - maybe I should step up to the 32gb and see if that resolves it.

If I can't figure out what's causing this in the next couple days, I'm going to have to use something else for a shoot on Wednesday. It'll be fine, but it won't be nearly as pretty as it's an available light-only shoot.

I Know this problem concerning DROPPED/JUMPED GRAMES is common to many users. Some of them seem to have solved it, not the others.
In any case we have several video with 5D WITHOUT THIS PROBLEM.
Some of them :

SHORT
http://vimeo.com/5516261

LONG TAKE
http://vimeo.com/5088458

NIGHT TEST
http://vimeo.com/2451786

So why there is no problem in these movies ? expecially in the SHORT with two actors ?

It seems to be 5DMII able doing movies without dropping frames (as these above), but what is the right way to be SURE to achieve it?

I believe this problem can be isolated to anytime the 5D adjusts aperture on its own. This includes:

- Being in auto mode and letting the 5D adjust aperture = skipped frames
- Incidental aperture adjustment by using a non-fixed aperture lens and zooming in = skipped frames

Solutions that have worked for me so far - work in manual mode, or be sure to lock exposure in auto mode, and use fixed aperture lenses if you're wanting to zoom in without dropped frames.

To reiterate, if you have a non constant aperture lens (f3.5-f5.6 for example) and you zoom in, even in manual mode to fix aperture, of course it's not going to fix aperture effectively since the lens can't support it, and the aperture will change, and the 5D WILL drop frames.

This is the most blatant cause of frame skipping, however I wouldn't be surprised if the 5D dropped frames due to other circumstances - why I don't know. My superstition says Nikon lenses are more reliable than Canon lenses for yielding skip free recordings. The only logic I can attach to this is the mere reason that the 5D can NOT adjust aperture on Nikon lenses, whereas aperture could possibly glitch with Canon lenses.

This may come as a disappointment, but still now, I hold this stance:

Although we want this camera to be the god-like machine we wish it was, don't rely on the 5D for critical 1 time recordings. Use it for controlled shoots with multiple takes, and situations where you can afford repeat takes, and to check and verify it recorded the way you expected. It's a flawed masterpiece of a video camera.

It seems logical to me that it may be to do with DATA rate

Pans, complex backgrounds etc

And of course above mentioned situation where the camera 'thinks' like aperture or wb adjustment

Since I use the manual controlls with the new firmware, I have never had this issue again.
In automatic mode it is reconstructable: The camera has two render all changes in light etc at the same time
