"The Tour" DVX Work In Progress

I got my DVX100AP about 2 weeks ago, and unfortunatly I havent been able to shoot anything for ME yet. I am shooting weddings and bar mitzvahs, and movies for my friends. But nothing for me :(

I have 2 scripts, but they need work. The movies I want to make are not movies my "circle of friends" seem to be interested in making. I like making all KINDS of films, so working for THIER movie is fine with me. I just wish they returned the favor.

But enough complaining! I decided to make my own little movie, and this is actually kind of a repeate of how I was with my very first video camera when I was 13. Back then I had no one to shoot with because kids my age were into thier own things, not making movies. So I had this camera all to myself and no one to shoot with. And so I would set up the camera on a tripod and act myself. Or I would video tape my parents.

Now I'm living alone so I don't even have PARENTS around to video tape. Just myself! So ya know what I did? I went back to being 13 and set up a camera on a tripod, became a TOTAL dork, and video taped myself!!!

This video was shot on 2 different days. One day I shot for about 20 minutes. The other day I shot for about 30 minutes. The editing took about 30-40 minutes total.

It's short. It's basic. It's me acting like I'm 13 all over again.

If you still care to view it, you're more than welcome.

PS: This is the first time I've used WMV Studio Pro by Flip4Mac. It doesn't seem to work for me when I export from Quicktime Pro, but it DOES work when exporting from FCP. Anyone else having this problem? And anyone who uses it, would you have any suggestions for video settings to get a good picture for a low size? Thanks!

That was great. Bravo for doing this and not waiting for a major project. Sometimes it can be totaly rewarding just to bust out little shorts. I laughed. Nice comedic touches. I'll defintaley watch the sequel. Keep it up. Looked great. The comps were very nice considering it was just you shooting. My favorite is the opening shot of darkness and then the door opens to reveal your silo.

Nicejob!

two more minutes? four more minutes. Dang! how much time you spent at the bathroom?

I think that was kind of oddly disturbing. Like I know you alittle to well. But very good It was funt to watch and nice work on the editting.

Cool

Cool

Cool, that looked like a really well done first stab at using the DVX!! Keep it up. by the way where did you get the music?

Hello all.

I am glad I did not disturb you all TOO much. I guess I will respond to you in the order that I got the comments.

JOHN HUDSON: Well thank you. The composition was inspired a lot by David Fincher. (I'll talk about this more in CarltonD's response). I've always dug (digged?) his eye for shots. When the camera was close enough to the TV, I hooked it up. And I used tape to mark the 2:35:1 frame. Then in FCP, if I needed to do a little nudging, I did it.

I had a girlfriend who was a photographer. We discussed how we see the world. I see everything fitting together in a rectangle. She sees everything in a perfect square (she loved to shoot with the Hasselblad film camera).

DVPIXL: Perhaps it doesn't look like the DVX because I did a little tweeking in post. I desaturated it quite a bit because to me, as much as I LOVE the colors the DVX produces, that level of saturation doesn't look like 35mm. I was kinda going for that :\. Sorta. So I brought it down, and then decided to tint the whole thing green... by just a bit! Just to make my place look a little more dull. But I assure you, it's the DVX. Perhaps I can post a segment without any filters! I won't even include the 2:35:1 matte.

ABALEX: Yeeehhhh, sometimes I just get those cramps. Other times I'm in there for 30 seconds and I say all the lines I know I wanna say and then splice it through out the video! But I'm sure ya know that hehe. BTW... the farting sounds were fake too! I sure hope everyone knows that! They were actually very echoey sounding in the file I got. So I browsed FCPs audio filters to un-echo it as much as I could so it could sound more contained. Before, it was like a recording of someone farting off the edge of the grand canyon.

IMGENTERTAINMENT: Yep. I agree it's a bit disturbing. Wasn't even sure about releasing it at first. But... people do a LOT worse to get their name out these days, so I did it. I'm glad you enjoyed watching it. I don't feel like any less of a man for appearing on the WORLD wide web for all to see.... cause I KNOW you all have been on the toilet too. Maybe not while on camera... but still.

CARLTOND: Thank you thank you. I've used video cameras since I was 13 as I mentioned before. So, using the DVX was almost natural to me. I had used it also for my friends movies, so I became familiar with it through that. (Unfortunatly for them, it was THEIR movies I had to have my learning mistakes on.)

The music is from the Fight Club soundtrack! Composed by the Dust Brothers. It's actually from the scene in the movie where Jack is walking around HIS home, as it becomes a virtual IKEA catalouge. I can HONESTLY say though that as I created this video at first, I was NOT thinking about that scene, or Fight Club or David Fincher. I was just doing my thing. Even when I added words, I wasn't thinking of Fight Club.

At least... I wasn't thinking about him or Fight Club on the first day of shooting. When I went to add music, I tried to think of what Elevator music I might have, and then BOOM, the song from Fight Club popped into my head. So the next day of shooting, with Fight Club still in mind, I ripped off the scene with Jack on the couch up late watching TV. I guess Jack has a toilet scene too, but the my toilet scene began as my own idea. Oh well.

Ha ha ha... ! That clip reminds me of something I did 2 years ago. I was also bored and itchin' to make a short about something. I didn't have a story so I just started shooting.

Here it is if you're interested:

Sorry, it wasn't shot with a DVX. It was shot with my very old Sony TRV-11.

Anyway, back to YOUR short, MagnumDB. I enjoyed it and thought the intro part was pretty good but then the interesting shots sort of tapered off. Looking foward to a part II though!

Well done, i have two words for you meta-mucil. or is that one word. I forget. The shots later in the piece look greenish compared to the first shots leading me to think you might need to CC a little bit, but it was quite funny and personal.

I'll reply in the order I did previously.

oscar-jaylen: I am happy you enjoyed it. That's funny that you TOO are on a toilet with them crazy old bathroom noises. I wonder how many others have used that time old trick. I liked the rest of the video too.

Which scene in particular did you think tappered off? I DO plan to do more shots, so I'll make sure to keep coming up with cool shots. It's what I was trying before, but I always welcome a challenge (so long as it doesn't come in the form of a rabbid dog ready to tear me to shreds).

Raptor3400: Hmmm. More greenish? This could very well be, since I decided to try and do a little in-camera picture adjusting on the second day. I puroposly made it a bit green. But you're right, the walls in the bathroom shots appear VERY green, so I'll do that I can to bring the greens down. CCing isn't something I've masterd yet, but I plan to get myself there soon.

I also plan to change up the music in the next cut because I fear it getting a bit too repetitive.

Thanks again for the replies!

There are a bundle of things I could comment on [great soft textures, lighting, [the sofa, etc.] but I wanted to talk about one thing. The shot of you taking off your shoes. I think so many our-age guys can relate to that. Not un-tying, but the slip-off-tug-toss-on-floor. Very human. Good stuff.

Oh and in one of the bathroom scenes, regardless of whether this was concious or not, it seems like you hold up one finger, about to say "1 more minute" again then decide 2 is more realistic. I enjoyed it, whether I read into it too much or not :[]

magnumDB, I guess the interesting shots (to me) started to taper off after the first close-up head shot... after you took off your shoes. Then I liked the focus change on the holes in the couch and the shot of you on with the remote control (how it cuts to an even closer shot).

I'm no pro, but since the tempo of the song is relatively fast, your video could be better if you cut in more shots. One example is where you were sitting behind your computer, try propping the camera behind the monitors for a shot to open that part of the video while you narrate. It would be like a voice-over while we see you at work. Then, as you swing around, cut to the point where you're talking to the camera. Just a thought. Again, I'm no pro so this may or may not work, technically. It's just something that I might try to do if this was my own video.
