"The Time Machine"

"The Time Machine", no, it's not a submission to TimeFest, alas, but instead my submission to the "Late Night with Conan O'Brien Make Your Own Commercial Contest". It was shot and edited in 24 hours, with 24 previous hours of conceptualizing, storyboarding, and prop making (the helmet). The whole project was a ton of fun to do, and hopefully that comes across for the viewer. Enjoy and comment.

Random: I'm starting to REALLY HATE Vimeo. Every video I upload ends up looking super interlaced to spite the source material being crystal clear, and everything gets stretched and distorted in some direction or another. It's NOT worth the 30 minutes or more spent uploading a full res video file if it always ends up turning into crap. Anyone know any good websites for uploading videos to?

Anyway, please refrain from commenting on the stupid thing looking interlaced as all hell and being awkwardly stretched vertically. I'd appreciate it, thanks a lot.

On a side note, I want to find a way to capture video & sound live from my computer, because I think I could give a great little tutorial on sound design using this piece as an example. Ah well, I'll figure it out soon enough, and upload it somewhere, maybe I'll just go back to YouTube, at least there I have no expectations.

Don't badmouth vimeo. It's by far the best quality online hosting/streaming option and it's free. Learn to encode your videos properly in the first place. De-interlace & output to correct aspect.r maybe?

As far as the film goes i really like it. You did a great job with only 24hrs. Nice one!

Thank you for the positive feedback on the film. Question regarding outputing, the video is in 16:9, but vimeo displays it 4:3, how do I correct this?
I think I've figured out where the problem was with the interlacing, but before I try to upload a corrected version I'd really like to try and fix the aspect ratio problem.

Ok. the best thing for you to do is export from your timeline to a dv uncompressed file format at 16x9 ratio, if thats what your vid is and if thats what your project is, then open up a quicktime pro window and drag the file in and hit export. Encode a .mov file uprezzed to 1280x720 with a bitrate of between 4-5000. In the size tab: uncheck the 'preserve aspect ratio' button, and for you you should probably hit the 'deinterlace source video' button, if u havent already done so earlier. Chhose your sound bitrate etc and then export it. It will take a while to encode and when it does it will probably look crappy within quicktime but don't worry. If you now upload that file to vimeo it should sort everything for you and turn your video into a beautiful crisp hd video. Or, at least that's what i do to achieve the best results with my setup.

If you have the hard drive space i would render from your initial edit as an uncompressed avi, not a dv avi. The file will be MASSIVE, like 10 gigs for a 5 minute film or something like that, but ive done comparisons between the final output of the two and believe me its worth it for that extra bit of quality in the end.

Remember to encode in quicktime to 1280x720 for hd widescreen, anything less and vimeo wont recognise it as being hd and you'll just get a smaller frame size with a massive bitrate. You can always turn the hd option off to view the video back as an sd file once you've uploaded it.

Sorry if thats all a bit unclear but try it and see how u get on.

I really enjoyed this. I loved your prop, great design (and great use of speaker cones :) Your lighting was also nice, I liked the window "streaks" across the back wall, nice touch. I do agree with the Professor, I would have pushed it but I like that style so that's just my opinion and you probably didn't have the time to get to crazy with lights anyway. Overall great job.

If you guys are down, we'd love to get you guys involved in some way on our next project or if guys ever need help let us know.
