This is a 2017 movie by Hirokazu Koreeda the Japanese director who also did this year's Oscar nom Shoplifters. For my money, The Third Murder is a much better film. The plot is clever and engaging with some excellent twists. It is also shot beautifully, with some truly excellent camera blocking and shot framing (particularly the prison interview sequences).
I am not one for remakes, but I think this would be a pretty amazing candidate for an American remake as the plot is quite portable and leaves room for a lot of possibilities in the U.S. context. In my opinion it is one of the most interesting Japanese movies to come out in the past 20 years or so. I highly recommend this.
