The things you find when cleaning out old drawers...

I wish for old times sake someone would make a moviola lever and pedal you could plug into a usb port and use as a stop/start button.

Where, when, I want one!!! it would be a nice experience for us younger people that didn't have the option to use a moviola. I would love to learn how to use one. I'm not closed to any way of editing film (or video). I would love to learn how to edit all of them!!!

You'd also need a plug in that would make a table rattling motor sound whenever you played picture, and something to make the film randomly break at inopportune moments.

I'm going to guess that you'd already had some experience with computer-based nonlinear editing before you took that class... even if it was iMovie or even Windows Movie Maker. At that point, of course you aren't going to see any value in tape-to-tape. It feels like moving backwards, and I have to wonder how in-depth that class (or workshop within a class) actually was.

Actually I never touched any digital video untill college, and the job that made want to go to school was working at a movie theater making up and breaking down reels with the good o'l splicer and tape.
Maybe this "new" (80s child so I'm not that young) generation who grew up with computers just "gets it" more on a computer then working hands on. My first aftereffcts project ever was a clomplicated (for a first time ever user) clone of me passing a can of coke to myself. And this was with only 5 minutes exposer to the program with no guidence. I didnt even know how to animate the mask untill I just started clicking around (Knew about keyframes from tinkering around with 3d programs in the past)

Point is, sure you have to understand what is going on behind the scenes, but I don't think you need to build a car before you know how to drive one.
