The study of optics

Where can I learn about optics?

I read all these posts about F-stop, Z settings, etc. I wonder what the heck they mean.

Where can I learn the math, and where can I learn the practical use of things like f/2.0 to f/22?

F stop / Iris is pretty simple : It is dial circle that opens and closes smaller to allow more or less light in. This affects your exposure and depth of field.

Shutter speed: The slower the shutter speed, the higher the exposure ( brighter image ) because your allowing more light coming through since the " hole " is open for longer period of time. It also affects anything in the shot that is moving, so either a subject, or a pan. Making the shutter speed faster will make evertying appear choppier ( think of saving private ryan at the beach sequence )

so 1/24th, its doing 24 rotations a second, 1/120th will be doing 120 rotations per second.

this means that the shutter is going faster and allowing less light to enter as its spinning at a quicker rate.

Obviously there is gain, +3 +6 +9 +12 + whatever your camera does. Try to stay away from these as they lower the quality of the iamge and add noise but do brighten the images quite alot. Not suitable for films.

Focus... well, its pretty much what it means.
