The sound room

i don't know which ones they sell but the two i have experience with are...

for best bang for the buck and best first boom pole i would say the gitzo carbon ones.

they are not internally threaded but they are very light and very strong and under $200

then for a really long one with lots of options and internally cabled the k-tek

i recently got the ktek that is 3 ft when collapsed and it extends to over 12 ft.

it has the internal cabling with a right angle at the end so you can set down the pole a not ding the cable.

i also have two of the counterbalance weights and when using it in the 9-11ft range with a heavier mic like the 416 and the ktek shockmount/windscreen it really makes it a lot easier to balance.

two extremes.

the first one was a great first boom for me and i'd never sell it.

its still quite useful.

the second one cost more than my first car but it is a great piece of gear that is made really well and it will get a lot of use.

with the prices being what they are for carbon non-cabled poles like the gitzo i don't see any need to get an aluminum pole.

You're seeing something else... not a real boom pole... sometimes what is called a "mic boom" is a little arm that only extends the mic off of a stand by a few feet. Like if you want to sing into a microphone the stand base is in your way... then you use a little (and I mean little) boom arm so that you can sing into the mic w/o kicking the stand base. Not exactly what you're looking for I'm sure.

The best bang for buck boom is either a Gitzo 7680c for about $219 from Adorama... no cable, but great 13' pole.

or a K-Tek ALUMINUM avalon w/ internal coiled cable... apparently $199 from enggadgets.com... and about $219 from anyplace else... this one goes to 9'.

Either is a bargain for what you're getting... there is no better boom pole value out there.

thanks for the reccomendations! What would I have to do if I don't have internal coiled cable? Does an xlr input come out of the ends or what?
