FX6: The Sony ILME-FX6V Owners Club

I think I'll grab the Sony 100-400 during the current promotions here in Oz, and then I'll have pretty much a full set with plenty of overlap:
- 28-135 F4: Love the PZ. It has been my main lens to date but I found the 28mm was just not wide enough indoors and it is kind of "stands out / in your face" in these settings.
- 16-35 F4: It gets the job done and is nice and small. For indoors the faster F2.8 would have been better, but I did not like the lack of OSS and the obvious focus breathing of the F2.8.
- 100-400 F4.5-5.6: TBA

I've also got the 24-240 F3.5/6.3 for a "light travel super zoom". I was also hoping this lens would work well on my gimbal, but the zoom ring is so stiff the zoom motor on my Crane 3S Pro can not drive it without slipping.

Hopefully you have at least one medium f/1.4 in there to take advantage of that beautiful FF sensor and eye-AF (even if it's just here or there).

The Sony 200-600 is currently on sale

Speaking of fast primes, I just got the 50 GM 1.2 and it's gorgeous. (But yes, breathing)

Well we are going into the last of June, still no FX6 in Canada and it would seem the same for our neighbours in the USA. Just wondering if there are any available for sale retail in the UK, Europe or Australia? Really wondering when Sony will start to ship or perhaps manufacture would be a better word. I for one am very frustrated waiting like many but do enjoy reading the exploits of those who got in early. This month I had two shoots, the first for a group in Spain that required PAL and it was basically B roll in HD. I used my true and trusty PXW Z150. What a joy to work with a simple camera with no add ons etc. Yesterday I had to shoot something more involved visually, so the A7iii, lenses, lights. All good but when it came to audio out came the XLR-K1M XLR Adapter and then the Sennheiser receiver along with the small rig piece to marry it to the rig next to the monitor amid the HDMI and Headphone cables coming out of the A7iii. At last all was connected but what an unwieldy contraption and God forbid I have to take it off the tripod and move with it. In the end, lovely images and sound but I don't think I will ever get used to this type of rig. Call me old school but snapping the camera on the sticks and plugging in a simply mounted receiver or just an xlr cable will always be the best way for me . SONY! Ship my damn FX6 please!

I've been keeping an eye on availability here in the UK as I was about to buy a FX6...but as far as I can tell, with all the good UK dealers (CVP, H Preston Media, Pro AV, 3D Broadcast etc.) everyone is showing it as pre-order status or awaiting stock. As it is, the delayed opening up after Lockdown3 here means I'm not exactly snowed under with the work I had planned with clients so I can (and now will) wait until later in the summer. I have no idea if any FX6s will start to ship by then. Maybe I'll just wait for the FX6 Mk2 ;-)

Put my order in over nine weeks ago, was told eight to twelve weeks but I'll believe it when I have it in my cold little hands!

Had been on a few waiting lists for months then a couple weeks ago found one in stock at the camera exchange so jumped on it. Got lucky I guess.

Thanks Doug,
You have certainly got me thinking. I will do a fast survey of what I have invested at this point and look into renting a Z750 or Z450 for an upcoming shoot. The Z750 with good glass is a significant investment at this point in my career/age but I guess the resale value will help compensate. I do very much like the EFP/ENG camera build. Made the transition from mag strip to 3/4 to beta cam to camcorder and then back to sony eng cams then FS100-700 and finally mirrorless a7iii 's etc. Now with my little z150 for quick and dirty work like earlier in the month it so tempting to go to what you suggest. 90%+ of what I shoot ends up on the internet not the cinema screen, then there are the clients however. Often before they ask about my experience or rate they want to know what I am shooting on.... nuts.

I was thinking about this topic last night driving home from a shoot. As you know, there is no single camera that can do everything, so owning multiple cameras is always going to be necessary for anyone who wants to work across the board in TV/video production. The Z150 is an excellent camera for the price and I enjoyed mine when I owned it. But, it's not 10-bit, it can't do 60 fps in 4K, and it doens't have variable ND, so it didn't really meet my needs anymore and that's why I have the Z280. Here are what I would consider to be ideal pairings of cameras, depending upon budget, of course, that would allow most people to shoot just about anything that came their way. Even the "low budget" suggestion is a pretty nice package that would easily work for the majority of what I shoot.
Just thinking out loud for no reason at all.

High Budget: PXW-Z750 and FX9
Medium Budget: PXW-Z450 and FX6
Low Budget: PXW-Z280 and FX6

(An FS7m2 could be substituted for the FX6 if someone wanted a better camera and they didn't need FF or 120 fps 4K).

Interesting (and fun) thought experiment.

I think I'd also suggest the possibility of swapping an A7S3 with either camera in the "Low Budget" category, depending on needs. That said, I *really* don't like using a camera without internal NDs (although the A7S3 is what I'm currently pairing with my FX6).

Am I correct that all of the A7 series cameras are still only 8-bit 4:2:0 in 4K with an XAVC-S codec? If so, then they are all non-starters for me.
You should check out the Panasonic S1H. I love that camera and it is a very good alternative to the FX6. Heck, it even comes with an OLED viewfinder!

III is Sony's first and only one with 10-bit 4:2:2, which is one of the reasons for its major popularity.

Ah, okay. Thanks for setting it straight. I kind of thought 10-bit was long overdue on those cameras but, as you can see, I don't keep up with their evolution.

Speculation was they had to wait until their contracts with others finished until they were able to release a stills hybrid with it.

IDK, but it's hard to imagine Sony Corporation was unable to release a 10-bit mirrorless camera for technical reasons until 2020 when mostly everyone else did it 4-5-6 years earlier.

On a side note, I think the E-mount is currently the best video mount; so much great glass from different companies for just a few hundred dollars.

By the way, DJ --> that Z450 4 min+ footage is awesome.

If you ever do that again, you must try it at least once with an ARRI camera.

It's not every day people do that...at least I think.

I know A7's were the question so that's probably why it was left out. But the Alpha 1 has 10-bit 4:2:2 internal as well. In my opinion it is the best mirrorless Sony has made, but the $6500 price is eye-watering. Especially when the FX6 with internal e-ND is $6000.
