The solid PL adapter.

Hey guys, Does anyone have the Solid PL adapter? Does anyone know if it MUSST be used with the base plate that b&H "recommends" to be used? Or can it be used by itself?

Thankss.

My advice would be ...use it with a support mount.

PL lenses are heavy and can be very heavy... but you also need to factor in that someones hands will be all over that lens while you are shooting. Make sure it is solid and supported.

Thankss!!!

How about the Redrock supporter?

The Solid PL Mount really was designed to be mounted on their own baseplate; I suppose you could use it with a lens support up front (like the Redrock) - but that's a bit of a kludge; a much better solution would be a fully integrated, rod-supported mount like the Hot Rod.

See the other current thread where we're discussing the various PL mounts: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?257271-PL-Mount-Round-Up

Yeah, kind of the whole point of the Solid adapter is that it be used with its own baseplate. The Solid's PL adapter mounts directly to the baseplate, not to rails, not to anything flimsy. It's SOLID. As a result the baseplate is huge and heavy, but man, if you want a solid mount, it's it.

Thanks Barry,

But I have the redrock system and I think that the Solid plate wont go with it... or Im I wrong??? (havent tried it yet, im calling it just for the looks).

Well, it may or may not be possible to adapt it, but... why? There are over a dozen PL mounts for the AF100 out there. The thing about the Solid one is that it's meant to be used in combination with their baseplate. If you're not going to use their baseplate, why use their adapter? Why not get something like the Vocas instead, which is meant to be used on rails?

Damn... haha.. I called the guys at B&H and they recommended me the Solid adaptor. I already bought it. I might have to sell it and buy the other one then?

Wu not use the solid base plate and all your othe redrock stuff other than the riser? All the rails and everything will work just fine.

I´m using the baseplate from solid wich bhphoto recommends. Everything lines up fine for the follow focus and the mattebox. The only downside to this baseplate is that it´s time consuming . Thats a bit of a problem if you are changing from pl to other mounts on set, because you have to take the camera from the plate before you can change the mount. But the price and the quality is good

Solid Camera, has a 15mm iris rod based support for the PL mount. It is not in the B&H list yet, but for now you can get them direct from us until then. Our PL mount uses a dual leg support to keep the mount from twisting at all and minimize the possibility of tilting. The base plate will support any lens without a chance of damaging the camera. The iris rod support is really only intended for lighter lenses that have a secondary support that is properly adjusted (iris rods pre-loaded). It's up to you in the end, for those that have shot with film cameras you know that they are very heavy. This is in large part due to the necessity of a rigid structure to maintain an image plane that is perpendicular to the optical axis. An AF100 does not have even a fraction of the structure so it must created externally which adds weight in partial proportion to it's rigidity. The more rigid, the more likely you will be in focus and your camera will not get broken when someone bumps into the lens. In addition to using standard ARRI shims, our adaptor also has the ability to be center adjusted for zoom tracking, it's the ultimate in precision calibration.

Hope this note helps!

I am looking at the solid PL system. has anyone who has used the system needed to add more shims to the one supplied? I would be using CP.2 lenses with the mount. this system seems to be the toughest and it is what I am looking for. any more info on it would be great.

In general , all cameras will need some sort of adjustment for dead nuts on focus marks. There are a variety of shim thicknesses, and you can also stack them if needed. Zoom lenses have to be right on the money to hold focus through a zoom. Almost all PL lenses also have internal shims as well.

I can walk you through the process if you need, it's pretty easy - four screws.

perfect, thanks. Im sure i will be ok but good to know there is help. hopefully switching to PL in the next couple of weeks. Solid Camera looks like its my kind of build quality. could anyone suggest a place to get shims, BH sells 16x9 and Vocas shims, though I am unsure of the correct ones. or these ones http://cameramarket.eu/steelshims.php
