A hunting weekend turns deadly when past secrets are revealed.

I was invited on a hunting trip this summer and since I don't hunt I thought I'd bring along my HV20. I put some adds on the internet that I was looking for a short script about 4 guys on a hunting trip and one came through a couple days before the trip.

The guys were reluctant at first to try the acting thing out and I didn't really have high hopes for their performance but they did better than expected for first timers. A big challenge was just fighting them for shooting time.. since their best times to hunt were at dawn and sunset the same times that I want to be shooting.

It was kind of an experiment at scripted partial reality based shooting. I think in the future I'd like to mix in more of the reality footage but still be able to tell a tight story with it.

This was a no crew no lights shoot... the only thing I wish I would have had would have been some portable audio recorder like the Zoom H4 or something.

I edited in FCP and color corrected in AE.

I don't know if it's just my eyes, but some of your shots looked almost like greenscreen?

Can you give me a screengrab of which shot?... maybe its just the characters backlit by sun with background out of focus. Its all shot in the wild except the house scene, no greenscreen.

Looks good, what mic did you use for the audio?

A very old school SHURE 839 Lavalier microphone hardwired into a beachtech DXA-2S you can see it clipped to a twig in the opening scene.

It wasn't great but better than nothing, I could have rented an Zoom H4 for $15 had I thought ahead... dragging a cable through mud and trees was a pain. I've even used my Iphone with for remote recording when there is no other option.

the first conversation between the men, the shots with the shallow "DOF" behind them. The background almost looks almost like a composite. Guess it is just my eyes. You made the HV20 look great though. good work

Thanks, I'll pass the compliment on to them. I wonder out of 100 random people what percentage are really excellent actors even without training, the same way there are really excellent singers who have great pitch, tone and instincts.

The problem with singers is that so many think they are good singers when they are not.. and sadly they wont get that much better even with training.

So how much better can actors get with training, with minimal talent... or do they have to have THE GIFT before they can really become good?

Would you say most directors are very critical or opinionated about acting performances?
