Just buy my books and audio tapes and you’ll be on… just kidding.

There is no secret. It’s pretty simple. Make a movie and create buzz. Let’s break the two down.

1) MAKE A MOVIE

The # 1 obstacle of making a movie is money. And I know, you ain’t got the money to make a 90 minute “polished” film to get Hollywood’s attention.

So what do you do?

Make a short film. It requires much less money and still looks polished. Don’t believe me? Take a look at Fede Alvarez and Ricardo de Montreuil films. They did it. Watch them and get inspired.

2) Creating Buzz

So after you made you short film, how do you create buzz? Still no secrets here. You got to do it the old fashion way – word of mouth.

You got two routes:

1) Go viral. Go to every filmmaking and video site you know of, like Youtube, DVXuser, Vimeo, DVinfo, Creative Cow, Viddler, etc etc and get your movie out there. Big or small. It doesn’t matter. Just get it out there to as many sites as you can. The more people that see your film the better. Eventually, if your film is good, and getting hit, the major press is gonna pick up on it.

2) Enter your film in the short film festival circuit. This route worked for guys like Guy Ritchie and Spike Jonze. This is one of the most trusted methods for creating buzz for yourself in Hollywood. Why? Because you got a lot of Hollywood heads at these festival looking for the next big thing. If your work is good enough, you will get noticed. If you need it there is a list of short film festivals on my site to get you started.

hey, i bought your book but didn't get it yet!!

:)

but yeah, it's pretty simple. i would add in there: make sure your story is good/unique. also, instead of saying short rather than feature, i'd say 'as cheap as you can get away with' without it looking cheap.

but that's just my theory as of now, not practical experience.

Lots of fests will not accept your entry if you've blasted the film around publicly on the internet prior to submission, I think this is an either/or strategy, it depends on which fests you want to enter but check the rules.

More important to have good story/acting than anything else in this range. And honestly if you can make a short, you can make a feature (IMO) for not much money, you just need to write a script that will work with locations you can access and find ways to work things out with your cast/crew, but it can be done...I'm doing it...tough but fun, and I think you've got a better shot at a "deal" if you do a feature since it'll be its own marketable project, unfortunately, shorts aren't particularly marketable in themselves, no matter how good.
