The Savages

Really good movie. Phillip Seymour Hoffman in yet another great performance. Laura Linney is one of my favorite working actresses. She gives a great performance, subtle at times, but nonetheless great. The lighting is great, editing, pacing, directing, and writing all top notch.

Well worth checking out.

Just saw this a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed this film and as always Hoffman and Linney were terrific.

For those of you who are Baby Boomers, this film is a must see as many of us are or will be going through a similar experience as either the children or the parent. Great acting, nice direction, a pretty cool little film about real life. The characters struck me as true to life, I know people who ARE these characters.

I thought this film did an excellent job at portraying the bleak reality of nursing homes. Having watched my mother put my grandmother in a home, the movie really struck a chord with me. I can't really put my finger on it, but the director just got it right.

As to be expected, the actors were top notch. The director wove dark comedy within a serious theme very effectively.

*SPOILERS*

The growth of the brother and sister at the end was very moving. The confidence of Laura Linney and the openness to commitment of Phillip Hoffman seemed to be a cathartic transformation made possible only after their father's death. After an hour and a half of dark material, it was a ray of hope for characters that were on a path to nowhere.

I thought it was a very good film. The acting throughout was wonderful, especially that of Philip Bosco as Lenny Savage. His performance was just so heartbreaking at times.

The film is very somber, but there is a lot of hope woven into the threads.

Hoffman is on my very short list of actors who I would watch do anything. Laura Linney is not, but she still puts in a fantastic performance here.
