The Road

jordandov...

I agree completely. The Road was such a visceral, minimal book. It's a slow burner.

I just really hope that its not some castrated glossy version of a great book. Never been so stoked to see a trailer and then only to be completely let down, as I was by this one. I remember for There Will Be Blood, PTA released a sort of "teaser" on youtube that was very unlike mainstream movie trailers and it was amazingly killer. I wish Hillcoat would have done the same here. ARGH!

Ok just watched it again.

I do think the film will be a lot better than what is on display here. The trailer is corny in my humble opinion. BUT Hillcoat is a pretty smart and crafty director, Viggo and Theron and Duval are quality thespians... I do have a lot of hope that this film will indeed be killer. I just really F**KNG LOATHE this trailer. Jeeezus.

I bet you one hundred thousand bucks that Cormac McCarthy thinks this trailer sucks balls as well. Guaranteed.

Just remember it is only a trailer. I was stoked for the new Star Trek after seeing some of the trailers, but the film let me down. On the flip side, I remember seeing the trailers for The Matrix, and thinking it looked lame. I didn't feel the same about the actual film.

I'm looking forward to The Road as well, and I haven't even read the book yet. I think it will be much better than this trailer as it seems to be the type of story that you just can't fit its entire essence into a 1-2 minute trailer. That's my theory at least.

great fake interview.

after a day or so to ponder the trailer...

I think its brilliant, this strategy of the ole "bait n switch"

ppl are going to leave the theater feeling that they've just been cheated. plus the movie will bum the average joe the f**k out. hmmm.... this entire experience might cause a wave of suicides and whatnot.

my god this nihil.

Sooo.........did anyone ever see this film?

What the hell, I guess it's playing by me in one theater. Talk about anti-climatic....I found this thread buried way back in the archives. I thought this was supposed to be a fairly anticipated release. I saw many trailers this summer and several newspaper articles in November. But now that it's out I haven't heard a peep. I completely forgot about it with the holidays and all.

I loved the book, did anyone see it? Did it suck?

They are rolling the film out slow, it's only in a handful of theaters at this point.

I thought it would be the feel-good movie for the holidays. :2vrolijk_08:

Thanks for the clarification. It just seems weird. The film had a delayed release date. Now that it's out (kinda), I see no TV advertisements, reviews. It's all just very hush hush. Strange.

Just got back from seeing this with the wife and Mr. and Mrs. Caffesse.

My soul is thoroughly crushed.

A very well-crafted film with powerful performances, but not a light-hearted holiday romp.

ZaZa, you might just have someone shoot you in the kneecap instead. The sensation would be emotionally similar to seeing the film.

To be honest, a shot in the kneecap would be an improvement. I really do want to see this, checking local theatres now.

Exactly, tough to handle but so well made and Viggo is fantastic, I actually enjoyed it more than the book (enjoy being a relative term), I could never get used to the writing style. I keep seeing commercials for Book of Eli, and after watching The Road, that movie looks completely ridiculous and laughable.

Oh It was amazing, but like everyone says, its a downer, I walked out of there like a was wearing weights, this was on new years eve, so I then had to go to a party... no more depressed have I ever been

I agree with Chris that the writing style almost made me book the book down in the beginning, but I'm glad that I toughed it out because the story was phenomenal.

Now to see the film.

I just saw this as well...I don't think i've ever cried at so many points in a movie. All i could do was think about my 3 year old baby boy... It was an incredible movie that has left me sad pretty much all day long.

Did anyone else actually see this movie? Mrs. and I saw it the other week and were one of two couples in the whole theater. Didn’t help that I don’t recall seeing one ad for it, little word of mouth, and it’s playing at one theater in town, and I had to really look for it.

I came away bummed out after it, but as the hours and days grew, I really started to admire it, for several reasons. Mostly because I think it is a very bold idea, and a thought provoking film. We don’t see movies like this too often from Hollywood anymore, and as alluded to in this thread, the trailer made it look like it was a harrowing disaster thriller with some action, when in the end it was quite faithful to the book, and good in it’s own right (not unnecessarily faithful I mean, like having them wear masks all the time like the book did).

I also admired the fact that the director, John Hillcoat, while having a background in music videos, didn’t make a glitzy glop of a movie with no touch for directing actors like I have seen from so many music video directors (McG anyone?). While it is very visual, this film is well acted, and well paced, showing deft skill.

I also admire the fact it made outstanding use of locations, which should be an inspiration to true independent filmmakers. We see so many Hollywood movies with tons of CGI everything. Much of this film was shot on actual locations. The Abandoned Turnpike, run down areas of Pittsburgh, the Biscuit Fire, etc. to great effect. There also seems to be this yearning among true independent filmmakers to come up with an idea, then use green screens and try to add a bunch of VFX in post like the Industry, and it never quite matches the level of expectations, much of it looking like a student test. But if you can match a pre-existing location to a good story, you can take a camera into places the way The Road did, you can potentially get million dollar shots.

Anyway, I really liked the film, and I'm hoping some of you who didn't see it, will make an effort to do so before it's gone.

The Road was beyond depressing. I like that. I like the non-happy ending endings where "hay everyhtings oh-tay now right before your impending doom" does not exist. I do, however, have a slight bit of distaste on a bit of the pace, it doesn't quite seem like this film has a beginning. It's different, but I don't like it any less because of that, it just took a long long time to get to like it.
