The Road

Trailer out for the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. I was a big fan of the book. Not really liking how they are trying to make this look like a more traditional disaster film, but from what I hear it doesn't reflect the actual film. I think the people look a little too healthy, especially the boy. The book constantly made reference to how thin they were. I'm sure they weren't about to endanger the health of the kid just for the film, but if I were making the film I would have tried to get that starving, emaciated look on screen. Would make watching the film all the more harrowing. Christian Bale was able to do it for The Machinist.

There's a lotta Cormac coming out. Todd Field is doing Blood Meridian. and Andrew Dominik is doing Cities Of The Plain. Both guys have only done two movies each and I love all 4 of em.

I hear the Road trailer was purposely made stupid to trick people into seeing it. The good bits hidden in the trailer look DEAD on to how I pictured them in the book. Viggo looks plenty unhealthy, I'd imagine the kid to look a little healthier since the father (most of the time) put the kid in front of himself.

Todd Field directing Blood Meridian? The clown who made Little Children? Dear lord, what were they thinking? Ridley Scott was probably a worse choice.

Honestly, if you're going to do Blood Meridian I'd go with someone who's got the balls to adapt it in their own way. You can't just film the book and go through the emotions, it isn't a Clint Eastwood or Costner western. They'd be better off with the guy who's directing The Road, John Hilcoat, since The Proposition (although I did not like the film) got that ruthless feel down so well.

This is what a starving person looks like--

Like I said, it won't ruin the movie, but it seems like a missed opportunity to do something more.

At first glance, I was going to say:

Jeez.
Unless he's dying from a disease like one of the guys that appeared in Trek, and wanted to be in a film before he died, I would not cast or capture this guy on film.
Not sure what's up here.

On second glance:
The picture on the right is not that bad, skinny yeah.
The one on the left: Acting, sucking in his gut, ect, and maybe with some makeup to highlight the ribs and bones, easy enough. In that case, good casting and the guy is in no harm.
hehe, yeah, I think just acting and makeup did it. Good job man, haha.

Not sure what the movie was about, haven't seen it yet, but if this was a missed opportunity and wasn't taken advantage of, I'd agree, sure.

You do realize this is Batman, right? Christian Bale in The Machinist, right before he did Batman Begins.

I was just shutting down for the night but stopped back in.
No (wow) I didn't know that. I remembered him from Reign of Fire and recognized a thinner version in Batman, but wow, that is fking scary. Thanks for the info.
No, I didn't recognize him here, haha, at all.

I take it you never saw In The Bedroom?

I'm a big fan of McCarthy's books. This wasn't my favorite of his, mainly because he was coming way late to territory that's been covered to death and he didn't bring anything to it, really, except atmosphere.

But I'm looking forward to this. It looks like they took a ton of liberties with the story, and as long as it's good and compelling, the skinny stuff wouldn't bother me so much.

However, I would probably see it for Garret Dillahunt alone.

I really need to read this book. It's been on my to read list for too long now.

Film looks really good. I'm getting a Children of Men vibe, not so much in that it will be like that film, but from what I've heard about the book and seeing this trailer, it looks like they are going really dark and not pulling the usual punches that Hollywood does with these types of films. Meaning no supernatural monsters, demons, zombies, asteroids, earthquakes, aliens, or chosen golden boy destined to lead mankind to salvation.

Viggo Mortenson will most likely be awesome as usual. They have a good director too.

Nothing like a depressing post apocalyptic tale for a night at the movies.

I'm a bit nervous about this. Of course it's mostly speculation until the movie's out...but damn does that kid look healthy at 34secs, and they're billing a lot of names for a 2 man show. And to help suspend disbelief it might have been a good idea to keep Viggo away from a symbolic ring :)

Actually watched the trailer now, and I'm not hugely thrilled with it. It seems like they've changed a lot of things about the book for no good reason than to do it. But, the interviews I've read sounded like they were doing the right thing. So I'll wait until I see it. But I'm already wary that this is now about some climate change catastrophe and not nuclear war.

But I'm already wary that this is now about some climate change catastrophe and not nuclear war.

In the book it's not specified as nuclear war. It mentions a flash in the sky and then a distant rumble. If it was nuclear then radiation sickness would have been an issue in the book. Cormac said in an interview he intended it to be an impact event, comet or asteroid, but purposely left it vague.

Interesting, I'd never heard that. To me all the signs pointed to nuclear war (the event itself, the social effects, the extinction of birds) but I guess you're right, it's never explicit.

In any case, I wish they had simply left it that way and not spent any time bothering to explain how there's a crazy climate crisis.

No need to put the actors health in jeopardy for a film.
It's a very unhealthy and possibly dangerous practice.

Trailer looks good. I'm in regardless of whether or not they look like they have been starving. It is a movie after all.

I was WAY bummed by the trailer... definitely looks like some "marketing" goofballs had their way with it

I hope the film is a lot better than what is put on display here.

also looks like they've liberally added a lot to the film that wasn't in the book... hmmm

also looks to be like some of the attackers and cannibals needed to be a bit more depraved looking... scrawny and wild eyed... totally dehumanized...

I hope this movie doesn't suck weener. the book was amazing. cormac is generally a smart and amazing writer. the coens did him justice. i hope "hollywood" doesn't pervert his work here.

I don't know if I'm looking forward to viewing this film or not. McCarthy is a genius and The Road was gripping to read and so different in style from his other works. Watching the movie will inevitably alter my memory of the book, whose final pages were read while secluded in the washroom. It's a story about a father's love for his son, after all; I don't believe the cause of the destruction is significant.

Blood Meridian on the screen? If unflinching and faithful to the novel, I don't see how it could secure an R rating.
