The Right Boom Mic

There are a lot of boom mics out there, and I'm hoping some of your guy's experiences will help me pic the right one. I'm looking to purchase something under a thousand dollars, and preferably under 500. Basically, I want good quality without over doing it. This mic needs to be durable, and if you have any suggestions for using it in rain that would be helpful.

Also, a Zepplin, dead cat, what should I get for wind cover?

If you intend to shoot indoor and out with only one mic, get a Sanken CS-3e.

There are better, but you then need to look at indoor mics and outdoor mics due to the amount of acoustic reflections.

Anything a little more affordable? I found that for 1500. Thanks though, it is great for future research when I get more money. Right now i'm just in need of something to tide me over for a few projects. And yes, I need inside and outside.

a lot of the input on this board is very professional. which is what you need to hear. now sometimes it may not be what you want to hear. and then sometimes there comes a time when you've got a very limited budget and you need to get something that can work. now it might not be the best for all situations, but it will work.

if i were limited on a very tight budget and needed 1 mic to shoot inside and out, i'd get a rode ntg-2 off the bat, along with a rode blimp. it might not be the best mic for interior use, but get it as close as possible and you'll have manageable sound. and then after you do a couple of shoots and build up some extra cash flow, then get the octava mk012 for your interior usage. $250

if you want a little bit better quality of a shotgun mic, go for the rode ntg-3, $700

or you can go over to dvestore and grab ntg-3 with rode blimp, xlr cable and boom for $1k

The simple fact is, there's no one magical mic that will sound amazing in every situation and retail for $500.

The Rode NTG-3 is quickly gaining a pretty good reputation as a shotgun that is usable in some indoor situations, and its made to handle humidity.

For wind protection, Rode's blimp is a good, affordable zep system.

In rain, you can wrap hog's hair around the zep to soften the sound of raindrops on the blimp. It's handy to have an extra fur so you can swap that out if it gets too heavy from soaking up the rain. Stick a (non-lubricated) condom over the mic as a last line of defence against rain getting to the mic.

If there was I would have mentioned it.

Everything else is a compromise in one place or the other.
