What can I say except CONGRATULATIONS to Sony! I'm glad that their focus on innovation is paying off in $$$$. I'm sure that cameras aren't the highest category of profit for them, but I am happy for them and grateful for what they have brought to market for all of us in the past 2 years. Congrats! Enjoy!

Sony is boldly black to black and booked the highest Q1 profit since 2007! You can read the full new financial report here:sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/er.html. And there is also very good news on the digital camera business front: Sony revised the forecast and expects an “increase in unit sales of digital cameras”. It’s the first time since many years that I read that Sony expects to sell more “units”! The merit likely goes to the new RX, HX and E-mount cameras.

Planned obsolescence working well for Sony......

You're obviously referring to how Sony is making Canon's DSLRs obsolete for video :P

No, wait, hang on... I got that wrong. You're referring to how Sony's products go obsolete quickly.

Like the Sony F35 that our own DVXusers still use to make fantastic images on, today, 7 years after its release (10 years if you count the Genesis!). And the stuff probably looks way better than if they had shot it on a RED.

No, wait, hang on...

I'm glad to see Sony doing well. We need them in there. They are incredible engineers and make great cameras. Maybe the success of the FS 7 has had something to do with it. Could be!

I can't speak for consumer electronics, but they've certainly been working hard to earn it on the camera front. They're consistently putting out some of the most interesting and feature-packed cameras out there, and pricing them reasonably to boot.

For many years Sony was massively in the red, making year over year losses. Recently Sony has restructured themselves and they are now isolating the profitable departments from the less successful. Nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't read to much into it. I'd call it business 101.

A profitable Sony sensor department will benefit many.

... A profitable Sony sensor department will benefit many.
But, at the same time, they enter into these business arrangements with other camera manufacturers who don't have the same sensor R&D and these arrangements usually result in a far less competitive camera market. If one compares, as an example, 4K camera offerings with 4K TV's, he can be shocked by a sheer number and the quickly falling prices of 4K TV's. The camera market is much, much slower to adopt.
