Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

didn't get u? why do u think someone would cry at this post?

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

My first impression, from the scant information that was at that site, was that a hand crank for a digital camera is a stupid idea.

Jeesh, if you want to have a variable frame rate, how about a joystick, or a throttle, or a thumb ring, or something like that instead of a crank?!

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

Yeah I read about that a while ago..the DVX is most definately a better more useful camera.

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

I still wish I could play with the kinetta though...it seems like a cool idea

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

I just realized something...where the hell is the test footage for this thing?!

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

I just downloaded the PDF for this thing.  The hand crank seems to be an optional thing.  I don't know how much this thing is going to cost, but it does have 4 separate 24bit audio channels, it captures to a drive with the uncompressed image data from the ccd and can capture up to 60fps at 1080P.  If this thing is a reasonable price we could have a serious revolutionary camera on our hands.

Oh, and by the way, don't diss the handcranck ;)
sure the vary cam can shoot 60p, but I'm pretty sure it isn't rampable.

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

That camera is chock full of proprietary designs and I don't believe they are ready for mass production, yet.

It's unlikely it will be at a "reasonable price" and I don't think you'll be picking it up at EVS anytime soon.

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

I remember reading somewhere that it will run in the $40,000 range....don't know if that's reliable or not.

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

I'm sorry but this appears to be a hoax. I need more proof before I run out of my trailer in my Mumu and curlers and claim that my photos of crop circles were taken with a new Kinetta hand-crank digital camera.

I don't know. The site and photoes just make it seem UNcredible to me at this point. Especially the opening pic.

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

Jeff Kreines has been around *forever*. He's one of the most prevalent posters around, and knows more about movie cameras than I would ever hope to. If he's the guy behind it, it's probably a good design.

I don't claim to understand it, but some people I know saw the demo or whatever at NAB and came away quite impressed. People on CML ("THE" list for cinematographers) know Jeff and are apparently quite impressed.

I know nothing about the Kinetta other than what I've seen on that website, but I'm inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt. I don't think it's a hoax.

Re: THE REAL DIGITAL FUTURE

Jeff Kreines is the man behind the Kinetta and as Barry says has a very good repuration in the industry. His camera was well received at NAB.

As far as ranmplable HD caernas, there is a third party option one can purchase for the Varicam:

The Clarity Image Varispeed Controller VSC-27 added to your Panasonic Varicam turns your camera package into an image creation powerhouse. For the first time with video camera technology, you will have the ability to program a controlled frame rate change over a defined period of time. This feature known as "Ramping," had been reserved for film cameras. Now the Clarity Image Model VSC-27 brings this control to digital cinematographers.

In addition to it's VARISPEED abilities, the VSC-27 gives you control over the Varicam's time-lapse recorder. Program the Clarity Image Varicam Controller with the duration of the scene and how long you want it to last on screen and it will program the camera's intervalometer accordingly.

Build & store multi-step macros
* Unlimited number of steps in each stored macro
* SD camera memory card scene file read & write
* Display of VTR status & current frame rate on LCD
* Camera Recorder Start & Stop control
* Full VTR control (Play, FF, RW, Stop, Record & Review)
* Remote on/off (Turns VSC-27 off without disconnecting control cable)
* High contrast LCD display w/backlight allows unit to be viewed in total darkness or full sunlight
* Field upgradeable firmware for future features
* Loop through port allows a Panasonic EC3 remote to be used simultaneously with the Varispeed Controller
